Based on seven lecture series given by leading experts at a summer school at Peking University, in Beijing, in 1984. this book surveys recent developments in the areas of harmonic analysis most closely related to the theory of singular integrals, real-variable methods, and applications to several complex variables and partial differential equations. The different lecture series are closely interrelated; each contains a substantial amount of background material, as well as new results not previously published. The contributors to the volume are R. R. Coifman and Yves Meyer, Robert Fcfferman, Carlos K. Kenig, Steven G. Krantz, Alexander Nagel, E. M. Stein, and Stephen Wainger.

This book demonstrates how harmonic analysis can provide penetrating insights into deep aspects of modern analysis. It is both an introduction to the subject as a whole and an overview of those branches of harmonic analysis that are relevant to the Kakeya conjecture. The usual background material is covered in the first few chapters: the Fourier transform, convolution, the inversion theorem, the uncertainty principle and the method of stationary phase. However, the choice of topics is highly selective, with emphasis on those frequently used in research inspired by the problems discussed in the later chapters. These include questions related to the restriction conjecture and the Kakeya conjecture, distance sets, and Fourier transforms of singular measures. These problems are diverse, but often interconnected; they all combine sophisticated Fourier analysis with intriguing links to other areas of mathematics and they continue to stimulate first-rate work. The book focuses on laying out a solid foundation for further reading and research. Technicalities are kept to a minimum, and simpler but more basic methods are often favored over the most recent methods. The clear style of the exposition and the quick progression from fundamentals to advanced topics ensures that both graduate students and research mathematicians will benefit from the book.

Harmonic Analysis in China is a collection of surveys and research papers written by distinguished Chinese mathematicians from within the People's Republic of China and expatriates. The book covers topics in analytic function spaces of several complex variables, integral transforms, harmonic analysis on classical Lie groups and manifolds, LP- estimates of the Cauchy-Riemann equations and wavelet transforms. The reader will also be able to trace the great influence of the late Professor Loo-keng Hua's ideas and methods on research into harmonic analysis on classical domains and the theory of functions of several complex variables. Western scientists will thus become acquainted with the unique features and future trends of harmonic analysis in China. Audience: Analysts, as well as engineers and physicists who use harmonic analysis.

This volume consists of a series of lecture notes on mathematical analysis. The contributors have been selected on the basis of both their outstanding scientific level and their clarity of exposition. Thus, the present collection is particularly suited to young researchers and graduate students. Through this volume, the editors intend to provide the reader with material otherwise difficult to find and written in a manner which is also accessible to nonexperts.

There are also several survey articles on recent developments in multiple trigonometric series, dyadic harmonic analysis, special functions, analysis on fractals, and shock waves, as well as papers with new results in nonlinear differential equations. These survey articles, along with several of the research articles, cover a wide variety of applications such as turbulence, general relativity and black holes, neural networks, and diffusion and wave propagation in porous media.

The aim of this book is to unite the seemingly disparate topics of Clifford algebras, analysis on manifolds, and harmonic analysis. The authors show how algebra, geometry, and differential equations play a more fundamental role in Euclidean Fourier analysis. They then link their presentation of the Euclidean theory naturally to the representation theory of semi-simple Lie groups.
