Getting started requires less formal education than most other jobs, yet it has the potential to become a rewarding career. Auto technicians and mechanics keep vehicles on the road by providing routine maintenance and doing repairs to correct problems when they occur. Employers also prefer candidates with certification from the National Institute for Automotive Excellence. Certification is available in a number of areas, each focused on a specific automotive system, such as automatic transmissions, engine repair, or heating and air conditioning. Those who achieve certification in core areas can earn Master Technician status.Trained and skilled auto technicians and mechanics enjoy a high level of job security. This has become a high-tech career that is always in demand and cannot be outsourced overseas. The job outlook is very good because of a shortage of qualified candidates and the ever-growing love affair between Americans and their cars. Large car dealerships are always looking for good workers and that is where the largest percentage of jobs exists. There are also many jobs at independent repair shops that do general work on all kinds of vehicles, and franchise services that are dedicated to single systems like brakes or transmissions. There are plenty of other opportunities that are less obvious. Delivery services, municipal governments, public transportation departments, taxi companies, car and scooter rentals, and police departments all have fleets of vehicles that need regular service. Plus, there is always the opportunity for self-employment, which is common in this field.Once in the field, you will find success more quickly if you have strong problem-solving skills, pay attention to details, have excellent customer service skills, can work without supervision, and are physically fit.
