Federation style housing is a unique and fascinating period of Australia's architectural history. Although the Federation house borrowed styles from many countries and eras, from English Queen Anne to Art Nouveau, it had a distinctive nationalistic flavour - God Save the Queen and Advance Australia Fair at the same time. This book is more than a mere series of pictures and descriptions. It gives advice to owners and would-be owners of Federation houses on how to restore them to their original glory, tips on specialised maintenance, and the names of experts who have the skills that may be needed.

Published to mark the centenary of Federation, this important book explores Australia's national origins in a comprehensive and accessible way. A high-calibre team of writers has been gathered to write the first ever comprehensive, general history of Federation. Starting from the perspective of the individual colonies as they made their way towards membership of the Australian Commonwealth in 1901, the book also provides cross-referenced short alphabetical entries covering key events, people and concepts. It approaches Federation not simply as a formal political story, but as a social and cultural process, maintaining the relevance of nation-making by highlighting ongoing debates about democracy, sovereignty and progressive citizenry. A major contribution to the Centenary of Federation, this book should become a standard reference for scholars, students and general readers in the continuing discussions of Australia's future as a nation.

The symphony retained its primacy as the most prestigious large-scale orchestral form throughout the first half of the twentieth century, particularly in Britain, Russia and the United States. Likewise, Australian composers produced a steady stream of symphonies throughout the period from Federation (1901) through to the end of the 1950s. Stylistically, these works ranged from essays in late nineteenth-century romanticism, twentieth-century nationalism, neo-classicism and near-atonality. Australian symphonies were most prolific during the 1950s, with 36 local entries in the 1951 Commonwealth Jubilee Symphony competition. This extensive repertoire was overshadowed by the emergence of a new generation of composers and critics during the 1960s who tended to regard older Australian music as old-fashioned and derivative. The Australian Symphony from Federation to 1960 is the first study of this neglected genre and has four aims: firstly, to show the development of symphonic composition in Australia from Federation to 1960; secondly, to highlight the achievement of the main composers who wrote symphonies; thirdly, to advocate the restoration and revival of this repertory; and, lastly, to take a step towards a recasting of the narrative of Australian concert music from Federation to the present. In particular, symphonies by Marshall-Hall, Hart, Bainton, Hughes, Le Gallienne and Morgan emerge as works of particular note.

South Australia and Federation presents a lively and lucid account of what was happening in South Australia at a vital turning point in its history. The federation era was the highwater mark of South Australian's interaction with people in the rest of Australia. Elected representatives of the central colony/state played a key role in creating and shaping the new Australian nation in its formative years. Peter Howell tells this story in the context of fresh examination of the ways in which South Australians were developing their own community.

"This book deals with all the private law regimes within the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth): proprietary copyright, technical protection measures, performers' rights, and moral rights. The work has a strong focus on Australian jurisprudence and law reform, and provides expositions of complex matters within their treaty law, litigious, technological, historical, or political contexts. It examines areas that frequently present difficulty in practice, such as implied licences, title, Copyright Tribunal jurisdiction, the interface with design law, and copyright damages. The work also provides an explanation of territoriality, private international law principles relating to copyright, and jurisdictional attachment. This is done in a way that both delineates the limits of Australian copyright jurisdiction, and sets out the various pathways for entry into that jurisdiction"--Publisher's description.
