Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: 2,7, LMU Munich (Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Accents of English, language: English, abstract: The reason to conduct this study lies within the question of how German (and therefore non-native) speakers of English evaluate different ways to speak the English language. How do they judge its speakers to be as a person and is this dependent on the variety he or she speaks? It will be interesting to see whether what way of speech they personally prefer to speak or what kind of education they received influences their judgement of the speech samples presented to them. A lot of research of attitudes towards varieties for the educational sector has been done, but the aim of this paper is rather to show whether this attitude is also influenced by visual stimuli and how non-natives in Germany evaluate the different ways of speaking English, to have an impression of how these attitudes in everyday encounters may look like. Consequently, there are several hypotheses which are to be tested by two questionnaires and with the help of the TV series "Downtown Abbey".

Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: There are few studies on the attitudes of linguistic outsiders, of people that are not from Nigeria, towards Nigerian English (NigE). Thus, this paper presents a small-scale study of attitudes of Non-Nigerians towards the NigE variety, intending to find out which attitudes the German-speaking participants show towards NigE. Herefore, the participants were asked to fill out an online questionnaire which used an indirect approach to eliciting language attitudes. The participants were not only asked to rate NigE on different scales, but to also rate General American English, which has been chosen since it is a prestigious inner circle variety, on the same scales as a means of comparison.

This book aims to contribute to the discipline of teaching English as an international language by exploring teachers’ reflections on the recent changes within the English language for their teaching profession. It presents a comprehensive and thorough examination of the place of English as an international language in English language teaching, especially in an Asia-Pacific context, looking at Vietnam and countries in which the context of ELT is similar. It examines and revisits the relevance of teaching implications, teaching of cultures and teaching materials currently employed in an EFL context. The author investigates a range of critical issues in teaching English in today’s EFL context as well as challenges in implementing new teaching ideas to meet learners’ demands to communicate with speakers from various backgrounds. Finally, the book presents a number of research-informed implications for pedagogy, theory and research in teaching EIL in ELT.

Higher education is becoming increasingly international and thus linguistically diverse, for educational, idealistic and financial reasons. This book presents a much-needed description of English as a lingua franca (ELF) from an international university setting and focuses on form and pragmatic issues, using authentic spoken data. It provides useful insights into how communicative effectiveness can be achieved in spoken lingua franca communication.

This book provides a detailed linguistic analysis of the communication between highly proficient bilingual couples, each consisting of a native speaker of English and of Swiss German. Combining the accounts of ten couples on their language use with an analysis of their actual linguistic behaviour, several areas of the partners' speech and interaction were closely examined. These include their language choice and language mixing, attitudes, expression of emotions, swearing, as well as their humour and laughter. In addition, the influence of the bilinguals' mother tongue and gender on their language use was explored. Thus, the study provides valuable insights into the language practices of established bilingual couples, while also contributing to the fields of fluent late bilingualism and gender research.
