No considerable expansion of territory has been witnessed, but, on the contrary, there has been a tendency to curtail the area of active operations. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Annual Bulletin on Mineral Resources of Kansas, for 1897 However, the inquiries from outside the state have been few in comparison with those from within. It would probably not be over stating the matter to say that we have few citizens in our whole state who are well informed on the mineral resources which we pos sess. Many have a vague idea that, somewhere in the southeast part of the state, lead ores and zinc ores are mined and smelted, and have expressed great surprise that, for a period of years, not a single lead smelter was in operation within our borders. Others have thought that our lead ores were shipped to the coal fields in the vicinity of Pittsburg and Weir City, on account of the cheapness of fuel in that vicinity; not knowing, first. That coal is seldom used in smelting lead ores, and second, that the amount of fuel used in such operations is so small that it is of comparatively little importance. Still others, with whom the writer has talked, have known of the extensive zinc smelting plants near our great coal mines, and have stoutly insisted that, of coume, our zinc mining and zinc smelting industries are car ried on in the same localities. A Similar lack of exact information regarding other mining operations is constantly met with by our own citizens and by those outside our state.
