DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis collection of papers is primarily concerned with wheeled transport in antiquity. They shed much light on the construction of the vehicles, the ways their draught animals were harnessed and controlled, and on the uses to which the equipages were put. Ridden animals also feature in this collection of papers.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK"The catalogue ... is truly excellent and makes an important contribution to the study of Greek Art." --Bryn Mawr Classical Review "An overwhelming volume. The subject matter ... is described in great detail in nine chapters. Essential." --Choice This catalogue documents a major exhibition at the Getty Villa that was the first ever to focus on ancient Athenian terracotta vases made by techniques other than the well-known black- and red-figure styles. The exhibition comprised vases executed in bilingual, coral-red gloss, outline, Kerch-style, white ground, and Six's technique, as well as examples with added clay and gilding, and plastic vases and additions. The Colors of Clay opens with an introductory essay that integrates the diverse themes of the exhibition and sets them within the context of vase making in general; a second essay discusses conservation issues related to several of the techniques. A detailed discussion of the techniques featured in the exhibition precedes each section of the catalogue. More than a hundred vases from museums in the United States and Europe are described in depth.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis work presents systematic and objective examination of the large corpus of Hellenistic gold Eros jewellery. By focusing on the question of the interconnections between the major centres of production - Egypt, South Italy and South Russia, Western Asia Minor, Greece and Syria a number of regional schools and new jewellery groups are identified. The keys to the discussion are the well documented find contexts from Northern Greece, South Italy and Tel Atrib (Egypt) that make it possible to arrive at a relative chronology for a particular type of Eros, found throughout the Hellenistic world. The morphological, stylistic, iconographic and technical continuities between Hellenistic jewellery and in particular the Eros motif ensure the successful use of this methodology. Evidence from Koroni in Attica and from several South Italian tomb groups has been examined in detail and dated, according to the methodology described above to ca. 240 BC. The study includes a discussion of the significance of Eros in the Hellenistic period. The study has shown the value of Eros jewellery as an indicator of the cultural life of the Hellenistic world - its values, literature and basic lore about nature and the arts. The Eros motif and its morphological lineage are traced through related depictions in contemporaneous decorative arts. The catalogue has brought together as much material as possible to establish a typology and chronology of Eros jewellery in the hope that it will provide the maximum amount of information for future studies. 32 plates, including 12 in colour, illustrate the work.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis sequel to the Archaic and Classical volumes publishes almost 1,000 Hellenistic terracottas, each of which is illustrated and described in full. Arranged geographically, most of the Mediterranean is represented, excluding Egypt, southern Italy and Sicily, with each figure presented in the area where it was probably produced. Each regional section is introduced with a discussion of the area's findspots and history and technical data is presented in appendices. The general introduction outlines general questions of the evolution of artistic styles, techniques and functions of Hellenistic terracottas. The black and white plates illustrate every example, while the colour plates offer a representative selection of the range of clays found in the terracottas presented here and also of the coloured pigments used in their decoration.
