DOWNLOAD EBOOKIAU Symposium 101, Supernova Remnants and Their X-ray Emission, was held on the Island of San Giorgio, Venice, 30 August - 2 September 1982. It was co-sponsored by the National Research Council, Italy, the University of Padua, the Observatory of Padua, and the International Astronomical Union, and was hosted by the Cini Foundation. The contents of this volume show the wide range of disciplines that are involved in supernova remnant research. Many new results were presented, not only from the X-ray observations from the Einstein Observatory but also from observations at optical and radio wavelengths. This has led to the stimulation of theoretical work, much of which attempts to accommodate in a more unified way all of these observations. Research on supernova remnants of all ages was reported. Perhaps the most impressive part of all this work is the way in which observations at all wavelengths have extended well outside the Galaxy to other members of the Local Group and beyond. The Symposium was attended by scientists from 15 countries. Twenty five invited papers and sixty-eight shorter contributions were presented during the 4-day meeting. Thirty-three of these shorter contributions were presented in poster sessions. This volume contains almost all (89) of those contributions. They are followed by discussions which took place after each verbal presentation. Since the availability of the discussions was left to the individual contributors, they are not complete, but those contained in this volume convey some idea of the nature of the exchanges.

These spectra, which contain lines from K-shell transitions of several abundant elements with atomic numbers between 10 and 22, were compared with various models, including some of spectra that would be produced by adiabatic phase remnants when the time-dependence of the ionization is considered.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKCTA 1 is a center-filled supernova remnant (SNR) whose morphology and spectrum indicate the presence of a central pulsar, a synchrotron nebula, and a thermal component associated with the expansion of the blast wave into the interstellar medium. The centrally bright emission surrounds the position of a faint point source of x-rays observed with the ROSAT PSPC. Here we report on ASCA observations that confirm the nonthermal nature of the diffuse emission from the central regions of the remnant. We also present evidence for weak thermal emission that appears to increase in strength toward the outer boundary of the SNR. Thus, CTA 1 appears to be an x-ray composite remnant. DOWNLOAD EBOOKWe have observed X-ray emission from the radio-defined composite (shell plus filled-center plerion) Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) 0326.3 - 1.8 with the ROSAT position sensitive proportional counter (PSPC). The derived distance falls within the range of a variety of previous but poor and uncertain distance estimates and is consistent with the only reliable lower limit of D> 1.5 kpc. Evidence exists in the literature from both optical and radio studies that would place the SNR significantly further than this lower limit. Higher quality radio absorption measurements are warranted to confirm our distance determination. This result, along with other recent ROSAT studies of SNRs, implies that improved distance estimates may be established for the large number of extended shell-type SNRs with very poor distance estimates which fall within ROSAT's all-sky survey. No X-ray analog to the plerionic radio emission appears on our ROSAT image, but our exposure is not sufficient to establish a stringent limit on any filled-center nonthermal X-ray emission.
