Excerpt from Prolegomena of the History of Religions I do not doubt that all real students of the History of Religion have by this time read M. Beville's book in the original. But the interest in the Science of Religion is spreading rapidly and widely, and there are large classes of English readers who seldom see a book which is published abroad, and who are more easily reached by an English translation. I hope, therefore, that M. Beville's book in its English trans lation will be read even more widely in England than it has been and I trust that it may help to remedy the injury which has of late been done to the Science of Religion in this country, both by its indiscriminate enemies and by its indiscriminate admirers. Excerpt from Introduction to the Science of Religion: Four Lectures Delivered at the Royal Institution, in February and May, 1870 These Lectures, intended as an introduction to a comparative study of the principal religions of the world, were delivered at the Royal Institution in London, in February and March 1870, and printed in Fraser's Magazine of February, March, April, and May of the same year. I declined at that time to publish them in a separate form, hoping that I might find leisure to work up more fully the materials which I had collected for many years. I thought that I should thus be enabled to make these lectures more instructive and more complete, and at the same time meet several objections that had been raised by some critics against the very possibility of a scientific study of religions, and against the views which I ventured to put forward on the origin, the growth, and the real value of the ancient systems of faith, elaborated by different branches of the human race. A small edition only of these lectures was printed privately, and sent to some of my friends, whose remarks have proved in many cases most valuable and instructive. If now I have decided on republishing these Lec tures, I have done so because I fear that as during the three years that have elapsed since their delivery. Excerpt from A Concise History of Religion, Vol. 3 Is there, then, a dark chamber here, too, which we are afraid to examine - into which we dare not suffer the light of day to enter? So Colenso asked of the orthodox critics who, when he exposed the human and fallible authorship of the Old Testament, expressed alarm lest he should carry his method into the region of Christianity. In the present instalment of the History I have penetrated the dark chamber, and at least left the door ajar by which that influential person, the General Reader, may enter. He who has neither leisure, desire, nor opportunity to search the books catalogued at the close of the volume may secure a bird's-eye view of the main results of modern criticism of early Christianity and its literature. As in the previous volume on Judaism, so now, I have attempted to show the religious process in conjunction with the course of political events and with the march of secular literature. For religion forms part of sociology, and the story of the Church connects itself intimately with the life of the world at large. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Comparative Religion The hartford-lamson Lectures on The Re ligions of the World are delivered at Hartford Theological Seminary in connection with the Lam son Fund, which was established by a group Of friends in honor of the late Charles M. Lamson, D.D., sometime President Of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, to assist in preparing students for the foreign missionary field. The Lectures are designed primarily to give to such students a good knowledge of the religious history, beliefs, and customs of the peo ples among whom they expect to labor. As they are delivered by scholars of the first rank, who are authorities in their respective fields, it is expected that in published form they will prove to be of value to students generally. Excerpt from Lectures on the History of Religions, Vol. 1 The volumes have a certain unity within themselves. The first, after an introductory lecture, deals with very widespread or very ancient religions, other than those which more immediately affected the world when Christianity was born. Vol. II. Treats precisely of these latter religions; Vol. III., of certain great stages in the history of Catholicism, with its Jewish background; Vol. IV., of the fate of such religious movements as separated themselves from the main current; of the great post-christian religion of Mohammed; of the modern destinies of the third great Semitic religion, Judaism.
