Two years after the conclusion of "Aeolian's War," with the apparent deaths of her sister and her betrothed and after the birth of her twins, Aeolian has vanished, leaving the throne of Atherra vacant. Her mother takes the throne and is controlled by another to assume full control. In the distant land of Tellusia, the ruler of the land, the Sorceress named Anomar has managed to draw the two presumed dead through the impenetrable Storm Barrier that has separated the two lands for centuries. Aeolian, now traveling alone using the name Silere, does not speak. She does encounter a woman that can read her thoughts and speaks for her. Once Aeolian is given information stating that her sister and potential husband are alive and in Tellusia, she begins trying to find a way to reach them.

Immediately following the events of "Modal Shift," the story continues with the beginning of Aeolian's quest to bring unity and peace to the land of Atherra while avenging her father's murder and claiming her birthright, the throne of Atherra. While still being pursued by her sister, Locrian, new forces appear to bring her even greater challenges than merely escaping a small town on Earth. She travels with her companions across several of the realms that make up Atherra and encounters a variety of people, some who will assist her, and some she is desperate to avoid. While continuing the path laid out in the Prophecy of Mithra, they begin unraveling the mysteries of the prophecy as the world moves closer to war, farther into the conflict that will bring about a drastic change to the realm, a war that will determine the fate of every living being in Atherra. With danger on every side, Aeolian learns to rely on her companions and primarily the one who has taken on the role of her Protector, Jason Garrett, the man who is much more than she ever managed. Together, they follow the path and learn there is much more to it than they ever imagined.

Used by C.S. Lewis himself, the term "scientifiction" is revived here as it once encompassed not only what we call science fiction, but also that indeterminate field of the 1940s and 1950s sometimes referred to as science fantasy (leading up to Ray Bradbury), along with a portion of that great realm that has come, since the advent of The Lord of the Rings, to be called fantasy. Rather as an eighteenth-century novel may pre-date the divide between novel and romance, so C.S. Lewis's "interplanetary" novels may be considered to pre-date the modern divide between fantasy and science fiction and thus be thought of as "scientifictional" in nature. The stories dealt with are those in which Elwin Ransom is a character, the three usually called the "space trilogy": Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength--and the time-fragment entitled The Dark Tower. Lengthy chapters are devoted to each of the four Ransom stories. The book presents a study of Lewis, the nature of science fiction, the nature of Lewis's "Arcadian" science fiction and his (and its) place in English literary history.
