"Materials Science in Manufacturing focuses on materials science and materials processing primarily for engineering and technology students preparing for careers in manufacturing. The text also serves as a useful reference on materials science for the practitioner engaged in manufacturing as well as the beginning graduate student.Integrates theoretical understanding and current practices to provide a resource for students preparing for advanced study or career in industry. Also serves as a useful resource to the practitioner who works with diverse materials and processes, but is not a specialist in materials science. This book covers a wider range of materials and processes than is customary in the elementary materials science books. This book covers a wider range of materials and processes than is customary in the elementary materials science books.* Detailed explanations of theories, concepts, principles and practices of materials and processes of manufacturing through richly illustrated text* Includes new topics such as nanomaterials and nanomanufacturing, not covered in most similar works* Focuses on the interrelationship between Materials Science, Processing Science, and Manufacturing Technology
This book transcends departmental, institutional, industrial, public, and research organizations and goes beyond global barriers to cover the integration of research, education, and manufacturing in advanced materials processing and, characterization including CAD-CAM, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and Smart Manufacturing.
Magnesium and Its Alloys: Technology and Applications covers a wide scope of topics related to magnesium science and engineering, from manufacturing and production to finishing and applications. This handbook contains thirteen chapters, each contributed by experts in their respective fields, and presents a broad spectrum of new information on pure magnesium, magnesium alloys, and magnesium matrix MgMCs composites. It covers such topics as computational thermodynamics, modern Mg-alloys with enhanced creep or fatigue properties, cutting-edge approaches to melt treating (grain refinement, micro-alloying, and the resulting solidification and growth), coatings, surface engineering, environmental protection (recycling and green energy storage and production), as well as biomedical applications. Aimed at researchers, professionals, and graduate students, the book conveys comprehensive and cutting-edge knowledge on magnesium alloys. It is especially useful to those in the fields of materials engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, and metallurgy.
Advances in Laser Materials Processing: Technology, Research and Application, Second Edition, provides a revised, updated and expanded overview of the area, covering fundamental theory, technology and methods, traditional and emerging applications and potential future directions. The book begins with an overview of the technology and challenges to applying the technology in manufacturing. Parts Two thru Seven focus on essential techniques and process, including cutting, welding, annealing, hardening and peening, surface treatments, coating and materials deposition. The final part of the book considers the mathematical modeling and control of laser processes. Throughout, chapters review the scientific theory underpinning applications, offer full appraisals of the processes described and review potential future trends. - A comprehensive practitioner guide and reference work explaining state-of-the-art laser processing technologies in manufacturing and other disciplines - Explores challenges, potential, and future directions through the continuous development of new, application-specific lasers in materials processing - Provides revised, expanded and updated coverage
Casting is one of the most important processes in materials technology. In this unique book, each step in the casting and solidification process is described and models are set up, which in many cases can be approximated by simplified analytical expressions. All casting methods are featured, including component casting, ingot casting and continuous casting. Applications of the results are given in numerous worked examples within the text. Conclusions on how to avoid cracks, solidification pores, slag inclusions and other defects of the castings, can be drawn from the theoretical models. These conclusions are based on research results, which together give an idea of the development in the manufacture of castings. Most chapters conclude with a number of exercises, answers to which are given at the end of the book. The accompanying 'Guide to Exercises', provides the complete solutions to each of the exercises.
The current status of the science and technology related to coatings, thin films and surface modifications produced by directed energy techniques is assessed in Materials Surface Processing by Directed Energy Techniques. The subject matter is divided into 20 chapters - each presented at a tutorial level – rich with fundamental science and experimental results. New trends and new results are also evoked to give an overview of future developments and applications. - Provides a broad overview on modern coating and thin film deposition techniques, and their applications - Presents and discusses various problems of physics and chemistry involved in the production, characterization and applications of coatings and thin films - Each chapter includes experimental results illustrating various models, mechanisms or theories
