Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: 80,0, Lancaster University (Lancaster University Management School), course: MSc of Accounting & Financial Management, language: English, abstract: The aim of this master thesis is to understand if a firm’s dependency on the over-all business cycle impacts the performance of accounting-based valuation mod-els. I evaluated stock- and flow-based valuation models and their performance across cyclical and acyclical industries and found that multi-period flow-based models perform well for cyclical firms, while acyclical firms are more accurately valued via market multiples (P/E-multiple). In extension of the empirical findings, an analysis of valuation models used in analyst reports points out that practitioners do not necessarily employ the theoretically superior valuation technique to generate their target prices - while practically used and empirically superior valuation models are consistent in acyclical industries, they significantly differ in cyclical industries. Furthermore, the analysis in this master thesis highlights that analysts show the tendency to adopt different valuation models dependent on the actual cycle phase.

Accounting is an economic information system, and can be thought of as the language of business. Accounting principles are created, developed, or decreed and are supported or justified by intuition, authority, and acceptability. Managers have alternatives in their accounting choices; the decision are political, and trade-offs will be made. Accounting information provides individuals, both inside and outside a firm, with a starting point to understand and evaluate the key drivers of a firm, its financial position, and performance. If you are managing a firm, investing in a firm, lending to a firm, or even working for a firm, you should be able to read the firm’s financial statements and ask questions based on those statements. This book examines some of the more advanced topics in accounting. As such, it assumes the reader already has some familiarity with basic accounting. (A related book covering the basics is Accounting for Fun and Profit: A Guide to Understanding Financial Statements.) The book explains how the user of financial statement should interpret advanced accounting techniques presented, and helps the user conduct in-depth analysis of annual reports. The author will show you that accounting, even the advanced topics, can be informative and fun.

Taking a macro approach and then relating it back to an application, the text attempts to explain the "why" behind accounting, in addition to the procedural methods. The authors are active teachers and have been successfully using this material in the classroom for many years. Each copy of the textbook is accompanied by a current FARS (Financial Accounting Research System) CD–ROM."

The most reader-friendly text on the market, brings real-world accounting topics to the student's level, presenting advanced concepts and issues in a flexible, step-by-step approach. This is the only advanced book that completely separates the following three major concepts dealt with in the consolidations area: (1) the general concept of consolidating (2) the concept of a non-controlling interest, and (3) the change or no change in basis of accounting concepts for business combinations. Separating these concepts makes it much easier for students than having to simultaneously learn multiple concepts.
