DOWNLOAD EBOOKEight commercially available ceramic materials were procured and evaluated for potential application as gun barrel liners. These materials included an alumina, zirconia, and SiAlON, as well as three silicon carbides and two silicon nitrides. Preliminary evaluation determined the strengths, fracture toughness, Vickers hardness, thermal conductivity, specific heat, and linear coefficient of thermal expansion. An uncensored Weibull analysis was performed on all of the strength data. These databases were developed for use in the probabilistic modeling and design efforts of the program to predict performance, identify optimum gun barrel designs, and to rank and down select ceramics for further evaluation.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKHigh-temperature ceramic fibers are the key components of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). Ceramic fiber properties (strength, temperature and creep resistance, for example)-along with the debonding characteristics of their coatings-determine the properties of CMCs. This report outlines the state of the art in high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings, assesses fibers and coatings in terms of future needs, and recommends promising avenues of research. CMCs are also discussed in this report to provide a context for discussing high-temperature ceramic fibers and coatings.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe growth of implant and fixed prosthodontics practices in dentistry has created a rapidly increasing demand for advanced ceramics and ceramic processes. Innovations in ceramics and ceramic processes are vital to ensure reliable and affordable dental-restoration solutions with aesthetically pleasing outcomes. The work aims to engage the bioceramics and engineering communities to meet the challenges of modern dental restoration using advanced ceramics. Incorporating fundamental science, advanced engineering concepts, and clinical outcomes, the work is suitable for bioceramicists, ceramics manufacturers, dental clinicians and biologists. - State-of-the-art-coverage encompasses bioresorbable ceramics for bone regeneration and bioactivating surfaces of inert, high-strength ceramics for implantation, keeping research knowledge appropriately updated - Discusses transition from the baseline stable and physically stiff ceramics research into engineering of highly coherent laminate composites for prosthetic crowns and bridges - Showcases current feasible techniques for producing, in cost-effective and materials-saving ways, long-lasting individualized ceramic components with biocompatibility, complexity and high precision

DOWNLOAD EBOOKBased on the author's lectures to graduate students of geosciences, physics, chemistry and materials science, this didactic handbook covers basic aspects of ceramics such as composition and structure as well as such advanced topics as achieving specific functionalities by choosing the right materials. The focus lies on the thermal transformation processes of natural raw materials to arrive at traditional structural ceramics and on the general physical principles of advanced functional ceramics. The book thus provides practice-oriented information to readers in research, development and engineering on how to understand, make and improve ceramics and derived products, while also serving as a rapid reference for the practitioner. The choice of topics and style of presentation make it equally useful for chemists, materials scientists, engineers and mineralogists.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKHigh-tech ceramics pose many challenges to the scientist and engineer because of their demanding production and processing requirements. Leading experts in the field address these problems not only from a fundamental scientific point of view but with particular reference to a broad range of engineering applications. This edited volume is based on invited talks given at a symposium held at the ETH Zurich in November, 1988, sponsored by the International Latsis Foundation of Geneva.
