After a number of the acrostics had been written, it was my pleasure to read them, on various occasions, to several literary friends for mutual amusement; each, in turn, suggested their publication. After repeated and urgent solicitations on their part, I determined to submit them to the test of impartial, and in all other respects qualified criticism, thinking that the result of this course would preclude their publication. On the contrary, however, the opposite course was recommended, and, accordingly, I now humbly offer them to the public for their perusal. If I shall succeed in instructing a single person, or of interesting any in the history of their country, much more, of pleasing any considerable portion of the world of readers, I shall be more than gratified. I am indebted to the following authors, whose pages I consulted in selecting material in the preparing of these sketches: Portrait Gallery of Eminent Men of the United States, Guernsey's United States, Bartlett's Life Of Lincoln, Headley's Life of Grant, Barret's Life of Lincoln. It is not all poetry that is found in books, nor is all the poetry found in books all the poetry extant: far from it. There is a poetry of life, a poetry of art, a poetry of nature. Hoping that the reader may find some poetry at least, in the Pen Portraits, and more of nature and less of art, I respectfully invite your attention to the Introduction.
