This unique work presents a detailed review of the processing and analysis of 3D point clouds. A fully automated framework is introduced, incorporating each aspect of a typical end-to-end processing workflow, from raw 3D point cloud data to semantic objects in the scene. For each of these components, the book describes the theoretical background, and compares the performance of the proposed approaches to that of current state-of-the-art techniques. Topics and features: reviews techniques for the acquisition of 3D point cloud data and for point quality assessment; explains the fundamental concepts for extracting features from 2D imagery and 3D point cloud data; proposes an original approach to keypoint-based point cloud registration; discusses the enrichment of 3D point clouds by additional information acquired with a thermal camera, and describes a new method for thermal 3D mapping; presents a novel framework for 3D scene analysis.

This book covers various aspects of spatial data modelling specifically regarding three-dimensional (3D) modelling and structuring. The realization of "true" 3D geoinformation spatial systems requires a high input, and the developmental process is taking place in various research centers and universities around the globe. The development of such systems and solutions, including the modelling theories are presented in this book.

Machine Vision for Three-Dimensional Scenes contains the proceedings of the workshop "Machine Vision - Acquiring and Interpreting the 3D Scene" sponsored by the Center for Computer Aids for Industrial Productivity (CAIP) at Rutgers University and held in April 1989 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The papers explore the applications of machine vision in image acquisition and 3D scene interpretation and cover topics such as segmentation of multi-sensor images; the placement of sensors to minimize occlusion; and the use of light striping to obtain range data. Comprised of 14 chapters, this book opens with a discussion on 3D object recognition and the problems that arise when dealing with large object databases, along with solutions to these problems. The reader is then introduced to the free-form surface matching problem and object recognition by constrained search. The following chapters address the problem of machine vision inspection, paying particular attention to the use of eye tracking to train a vision system; images of 3D scenes and the attendant problems of image understanding; the problem of object motion; and real-time range mapping. The final chapter assesses the relationship between the developing machine vision technology and the marketplace. This monograph will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of computer science and applied mathematics.

Topographic Laser Ranging and Scanning, Second Edition, provides a comprehensive discussion of topographic LiDAR principles, systems, data acquisition, and data processing techniques. This edition presents an introduction and summary of various LiDAR systems and their principles and addresses the operational principles of the different components and ranging methods of LiDAR systems. It discusses the subsequent geometric processing of LiDAR data, with particular attention to quality, accuracy, and meeting standards and addresses the theories and practices of information extraction from LiDAR data, including terrain surface generation, forest inventory, orthoimage generation, building reconstruction, and road extraction. Written by leaders in the field, this comprehensive compilation is a must-have reference book for senior undergraduate and graduate students majoring or working in diverse disciplines, such as geomatics, geodesy, natural resources, urban planning, computer vision, and computer graphics. It is also vital resource for researchers who are interested in developing new methods and need in-depth knowledge of laser scanning and data processing and other professionals may gain the same from the broad topics addressed in this book. New in the Second Edition: A comprehensive array of new laser ranging and scanning technologies. Developments in LiDAR data format and processing techniques. Regrouping of surface modeling, representations and reconstruction. Enhanced discussions on the principles and fundamentals beyond small-footprint pulsed laser systems and new application examples. Many new examples and illustrations.

The current nal degree project covers the development of a C++ program to reconstruct 3D scenes from a stream of incoming RGBD images from the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor using the PCL library and the libfreenect2 open source Kinect drivers. A background analysis is performed to analyze state of the art registration algorithms and similar registration applications which are already distributed. All the computing steps are explained and detailed, from the data acquisition through the coarse and ne alignment steps to the nal surface reconstruction algorithm. Several algorithms are discussed for each step, giving reasons for the nal algorithm choice and the parameters set. Finally, a brief discussion on the results and problems encountered during the development of the project serves as the basis of a proposal of improvements for future work on the subject. The project budget and the environmental impact are analyzed before the nal conclusion chapter.
