Excerpt from A Winter at Mentone The geological and botanical resources of the great oolitic mountain chain, which bounds the land view from Mentone on every side, form an abundant field for research. Many strange mountain peaks and rock caverns still remain unvisited and unknown. But, above all, the neighbourhood of Mentone 'will afford employment to the painter, whether he prefers the pines and orange-groves of the sunny shore, the dark sculptured streets and marble balconies of the old Riviera towns, or the wild 'position of the ruined strongholds, in the heart of the neighbouring moun tains. Excerpt from Contributions to the Flora of Mentone, and to a Winter Flora of the Riviera, Including the Coast From Marseilles to Genoa The want of an illustrated Continental flora has long been felt by tourists, invalids, and others, who fail, either from want of power or inclination, to determine their plants by the present available means. Though unable at present to commence such an undertaking, I h0pe that the present work may afford some facilities which may induce not a few invalids and others to turn their attention to the study of the wild flowers of the district, and thus find a pleasant subject for recreation. When considering the thousands of idle hands which every winter pull myriads of flowers to pieces south of the Alps, and the thousand restless energies all craving for employment in weary satiety of absolute rest, it becomes quite a marvel that these hundred handed colonies of English should so rarely be set to work at drawing for publication some few of the wonderful objects of Natural History by which they are everywhere surrounded. In the water, the earth, the air, unknown wonders await diligent search and investigation, while the host of things half-known teems with opportunity for scientific inquiry. Well-directed research in any definite direction must afford happy employment for the invalid, and tend towards the advance. Excerpt from Winter and Spring on the Shores of the Mediterranean: Or the Riviera, Mentone, Italy, Corsica, Sicily, Algeria, Spain, and Biarritz as Winter Climates The present work embodies the experience of ten winters and springs passed on the shores of the Mediterranean, from October, 1859, to May, 1869, under the following circumstances: - Five-and-twenty years devoted to a laborious profession, and the harassing cares which pursue a hard-worked London physician, broke down vital powers. In 1859 I became consumptive, and strove in vain to arrest the progress of disease. At last, resigning all professional duties, I wrapped my robes around me, and departed southwards in the autumn of the year 1859, to die in a quiet comer, as I and my Mends thought. It was not, however, to be so. The reminiscences of former travel took me to Mentone, on the Genoese Riviera, and under its genial sky, freed from the labours and anxieties of former life, to my very great surprise I soon began to rally. The second winter I wished to find a locality even more favoured, one more in the stream of life, present or past, and sought for it in Italy. The search, however, was vain, and the unhygienic state of the large towns of that classical land partly undid the good previously gained. The church is political. Theologians have been debating this claim for years. Liberationists, Anabaptists, Augustinians, neo-Calvinists, Radical Orthodox and others continue to discuss the matter. What do we mean by politics and the political? What are the limits of the church’s political reach? What is the nature of the church as an institution? How do we establish these claims theologically? Jonathan Leeman sets out to address these questions in this significant work. Drawing on covenantal theology and the ‘new institutionalism’ in political science, Leeman critiques political liberalism and explores how the biblical canon informs an account of the local church as an embassy of Christ’s kingdom. Political Church heralds a new era in political theology.

Excerpt from Information and Directions for Travellers on the Continent I will now close this preface by saying, that, in the h0pe of being serviceable to those of my compatriots, who, in consequence of pul monary complaints, are compelled to exchange their native climate for the mild temperature of Italy, I have ventured to make a few observations relative to health, and the result of twelve years expe ricuce; during the greater part of which period my time and thoughts were chiefly occupied by endeavours to mitigate the renderings of those most dear to me: and highly gratified should I feel if the little knowledge I have been able to collect could so far inform Travellers, as to guard them against those serious inconveniences which too generally retard, and not unfrequently prevent, the reco very of consumptive persons.
