Excerpt from A Primer of Air Navigation Prior to the year 1919 there was little occasion for long-distance air navigation: the subject has, however, become one which requires study, and the remarkable transatlantic flights of 1919 have shown that the art of sea navigation can with suitable modifications be applied to the air. The purpose of this little book is to show in simple language how this can best be done and how when sea-going methods fail others can be devised to take their place. The net result is that although the long experience and tradition of sea navigators forms the convenient basis on which air pilotage and navigation is founded, the latter have individuality enough to substantiate a claim for separate treatment. As at sea, so in the air, the navigator's duty is to keep his dead reckoning position and, as opportunity offers, to check this position by such other methods as are available. This D.R. work is equally necessary in Air Pilotage and Air Navigation. The checks in the case of the former are references to maps and the recognition of the country flown over; in the latter they are the methods of directional wireless and astronomical observation. Excerpt from Air Navigation Since this book is based largely on original material, credit is also due those who helped in this preliminary work: Lieutenant J. E. Gingrich, U. S. Navy, with the Line of Position Book; Lieutenant F. R. Dodge, U. S. Navy, Mr. Louis R. Johnson, and Harold C. Gatty, with the Star Altitude Curves; and Mr. J. F. Burke of the Navy Yard, New York, with Aviator's Dead-reckoning Tables. Also, the development of the Star Altitude Curves proved to be an extensive undertaking and I am indebted, for financial help and advice to my brother, Captain G. H. Weems, U. S. Army; to my friend, Lincoln Ellsworth; to my cousin, Andrew Gennett; to my uncle, F. A. M. Burrell; and to my friend, E. J. Willis. In collecting data and making tests of instruments and methods dis cussed in this book, it was desirable to make repeated flights under various conditions. The following air lines gave generous assistance in this work: The Maddux Air Lines, The Western Air Express, West Coast Air Transport Company, and The Boeing Company. Excerpt from Air Navigation: Notes and Examples The subject has been treated in a very elementary manner, and it will be found that common sense and a little knowledge of arithmetic are sufficient for all the problems dealt with, though one 'or two of the proofs require a slight acquaintance with geometry. Excerpt from Proceedings of the International Conference on Aerial Navigation: Held in Chicago, August 1, 2, 3 and 4, 1893 The proposal to hold an International Conference on Aerial Navigation in Chicago during the Columbian Exposition first originated with Professor A. F.Zahm, of Ndtre Dame University. He conferred with Mr. C. C. Bonney, President of the World's Congress Auxiliary, an organization under the auspices of the World's Columbian Exposition, intended to promote the meeting of various congresses; then be interested various persons in the project, and in December, 1898, a committee of organization was formed. This committee, in consultation with President Bonney, decided to hold the Conference during the same week as the Engineering Congress, in order to secure the attendance of engineers at the discussions; and the following circular was Issued: Not things, but men. President, Charles C.Bonney. Treasurer, Lyman J.Gage. Vice-President, Thomas B.Bryan. Secretary, Benjamin Bntterworth. The Worlds Congress Auxiliary Of The Worlds Columbian Exposition Of 1893. Department of Engineering. General Division of Aerial Navigation. Preliminary Address Of The Worlds Congress Committee On An International Conference On Aerial Naviga-Tion. In connection with the various congresses which will be held next year, under the auspices of the Worlds Congress Auxiliary, it is proposed to hold in Chicago, in 1893, an Inter national Conference on AeiJal Navigation, somewhat similar to that which took place in Paris during the French Exposition of 1889;the subject being one which, while it has hitherto been left chiefly in the hands of the more imaginative inventors (perhaps in consequence of the prodigious mechanical difficulties which it involves), has of later years attracted the attention of some scientific men and engineers.
