The Cambridge Platform, 1648, rested its discipline ultimately on the coercive power of the magistrate, as its last chapter shows; and to that power there were sad but frequent appeals. This very citadel soon crumbled into ruins, but no other defence was erected in its place, except in Connecticut (see my article in the New Englander, 1883, 461-491, on Some Neglected Factors in Congregational Fellowship.
