Held annually in Moscow since 1990, the Mathematical Festival is a brilliant and fascinating math competition attended by hundreds of middle school students. This contains problems presented at the Festival during the years 1990-2011, along with hints and solutions for many of them. Most of the problems are accessible to students with no additional training in mathematics and may be used as supplementary material at school or at home.

The Math Festival is a mass participation event for 6th and 7th grade students, who have a special interest in mathematics. This event includes various activities including a mathematics Olympiad, conferences for students and parents, mathematical games, among others. This festival has been held every year at the Moscow State University - M. V. Lomonosov since 1990, and since 1994 it is held within the framework of the Moscow Mathematical Olympiads. This workbook includes all the Olympiads held during the years 2011-2020 and is especially aimed at middle school students as well as students in the last year of elementary school, with the purpose that the students interested in either preparing for a competition or simply in practicing entertaining problems to improve his math skills, challenge themselves to solve these interesting problems; or it could even be useful in the realization of simulations of this competition, trying the student to solve the greatest number of problems in each exam in a maximum time of 2 hours. It can also be useful for teachers, parents, and math study circles. The book has been carefully crafted so that the student can work on the same book without the need for additional sheets, what will allow the student to have an orderly record of the problems already solved. Each test in each grade (6th and 7th) includes a set of 6 problems on different school math topics. Generally, the first 2 problems are usually the most accessible, although this is not always the case. To be able to face these problems successfully, no more knowledge is required than that covered in the school curriculum; however, many of these problems require an ingenious approach to be tackled successfully. Only in very particular cases, some problems will require some special knowledge to be solved. Students are encouraged to keep trying to solve each problem as a personal challenge, as many times as necessary. Once an answer is obtained, it can be checked against the answers provided at the end of the book.

This book, inspired by the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival, aims to engage students in mathematical discovery through fun and approachable problems that reveal deeper mathematical ideas. Each chapter starts with a gentle on-ramp, such as a game or puzzle requiring no more than simple arithmetic or intuitive concepts of symmetry. Follow-up problems and activities require intuitive logic and reveal more sophisticated notions of strategy and algorithms. Projects are designed so that progress is more important than any end goal, ensuring that students will learn something significant no matter how far they get. The process of understanding the questions and how they build on one another becomes an exhilarating ride, revealing serious mathematics before the reader is aware of the transition. This book can be used in classrooms, math clubs, after school activities, homeschooling, and parent/student gatherings and is appropriate for students of age 8 to 18, as well as for teachers wanting to hone their skills. In the interest of fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life, MSRI and the AMS are publishing books in the Mathematical Circles Library series as a service to young people, their parents and teachers, and the mathematics profession.

Playing with Math: Stories from Math Circles, Homeschoolers, and Passionate Teachers brings together the stories of over thirty authors who share their math enthusiasm with their communities, families, or students. After every chapter is a puzzle, game, or activity to get you and your kids playing with math too. MATH CIRCLES: Julia and Maria conduct math circles with young children. Jamylle creates a math circle for African American middle-school students. Bob and Ellen take their math circle into a prison. Colleen discovers the power of games at her after-school math center. Sue opens her home up for families to play with math. Nancy creates a math festival. HOMESCHOOLERS: Julie learns from her kids how differently each child learns math. Jimmie hesitantly dips her toe in the water, and moves her daughter toward a living math approach. Tiff, the math hater, discovers beauty in math. PASSIONATE TEACHERS: Michelle teaches math with the help of three-toed dinosaurs, while Friedrich gets his help from vampires. Pilar begs parents to let their kids discover mathematical truths without being shown our grown-up shortcuts too quickly. WHO'S THIS BOOK FOR? Parents, grandparents, teachers, math enthusiasts, math-haters who don't want to pass their affliction on...Everyone! Thoughtful stories, puzzles, games, and activities will give you new insights. 'The presentations gathered in this book offer plenty of ideas and advice for anyone seeking to start a program or affiliate with an existing one. In general, the authors do not compare their programs to those described in other chapters, but readers of the whole volume will identify significant commonalties across the various audiences, processes, obstacles, and outcomes described.Summing up: Recommended. All readers.'CHOICEThis groundbreaking anthology is a collection of accounts from leaders in mathematical outreach initiatives. The experiences range from prison education programs to alternative urban and Indian reservation classrooms across the United States, traversing the planet from the Americas to Africa, Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. Their common theme is the need to share meaningful and beautiful mathematics with disenfranchised communities across the globe.Through these stories, the authors share their educational philosophy, personal experiences, and student outcomes. They incorporate anecdotal vignettes since research articles in mathematics education often exclude them. The inclusion of these stories is an element that adds immeasurable value to the larger narratives they tell.

A photographic exploration of mathematicians’ chalkboards “A mathematician, like a painter or poet, is a maker of patterns,” wrote the British mathematician G. H. Hardy. In Do Not Erase, photographer Jessica Wynne presents remarkable examples of this idea through images of mathematicians’ chalkboards. While other fields have replaced chalkboards with whiteboards and digital presentations, mathematicians remain loyal to chalk for puzzling out their ideas and communicating their research. Wynne offers more than one hundred stunning photographs of these chalkboards, gathered from a diverse group of mathematicians around the world. The photographs are accompanied by essays from each mathematician, reflecting on their work and processes. Together, pictures and words provide an illuminating meditation on the unique relationships among mathematics, art, and creativity. The mathematicians featured in this collection comprise exciting new voices alongside established figures, including Sun-Yung Alice Chang, Alain Connes, Misha Gromov, Andre Neves, Kasso Okoudjou, Peter Shor, Christina Sormani, Terence Tao, Claire Voisin, and many others. The companion essays give insights into how the chalkboard serves as a special medium for mathematical expression. The volume also includes an introduction by the author, an afterword by New Yorker writer Alec Wilkinson, and biographical information for each contributor. Do Not Erase is a testament to the myriad ways that mathematicians use their chalkboards to reveal the conceptual and visual beauty of their discipline—shapes, figures, formulas, and conjectures created through imagination, argument, and speculation.
