Excerpt from The Puritans in Power: A Study in the History of the English Church From 1640 to 1660 The object of the following sketch is to illustrate the effect of the Puritan Revolution upon the Church of England and upon the Universities as institutions closely connected with the Church. In pursuing this purpose I have had in mind the immediate and material results of the revolution rather than the influence exercised upon religious thought, upon the future history of parties within the Church, or upon the relations of the Church to Dissent. I have not attempted, except by way of the shortest possible introduction, to analyse the development of the Puritan movement or to trace the steps which brought it into conflict with the school of Archbishop Laud - a field which has provided ample material for independent investigation. My aim has been to collect evidence descriptive of the methods by means of which the revolution was accomplished and generally illustrative of the outward aspects of the Puritan regime. If in the course of the discussion I have touched upon matters of polemical interest it has not been with the object of providing weapons to the armoury of either side in the dispute. Excerpt from History of the Puritans in England, And, the Pilgrim Fathers This volume is intended to compress, within narrow limits, the story of the English Puritans, by weaving into the tissue of the general narrative some biographical details re specting the men who bore that name. The writer has spared no pains in consulting the best authorities on both sides of the great controversy of which Puritanism was the result. He can conscientiously present the history to the public as authentic; and he hopes it will not be condemned by any intelligent and candid reader as wanting in fairness towards the opponents of the Puritans. If there is less of the tone of an advocate and admirer than in some other works of the same description, he has only to say, that he has described the Puritans as they have appeared to his own mind in reading their writings and those of their con temporaries; that he has felt no anxiety about gratifying; the spirit of party; and that he has long been convinced of the folly, as well as the injustice, of loading the men of any principles, in any age, with excessive praise. The time has come, by general consent, for doing justice to the memory of the English Puritans. Let justice su ice. Their doings belong to our national history, their writings to our national literature; and we claim the inheritance of their principles.
