"When I was a boy of eight in the Platte Valley of Nebraska, my father made the first of the many moves that would prove to be of interest to a future writer of fiction. They were east to Chicago, the point on the map where all the lines pointed. Almost twenty years would pass before I would seek to recapture the past that I had experienced. The Works of Loveis the first fruit of that effort, and the linchpin in my novels concerned with the plains. The reader who has read The Home Place or The Field of Vision will find in this novel the crux of an experience I frequently return to but never exhaust."--Wright Morris

Samuel Beckett's Play, written 1962-63, was an aesthetic watershed inaugurating his late, 'abstract' dramatic style. This book gets close to Beckett's creative process by examining the possible influence of Arnold Schoenberg's twelve-tone music and Vassily Kandinsky's abstract painting upon this formal shift; by tracing Beckett's developing attitude to abstraction and its relation to his long-standing preoccupation with the 'breakdown' of the subject-object relation and the ultimate failure of all expression; and by following his formal choices through manuscript drafts. The author goes on to analyse Beckett's attempt to adapt his new methods to the media of film and television, and to demonstrate how Beckett's late works for stage and screen develop alongside one another right up to his 1985 adaptation of the play What Where for television. Throughout the book, unpublished manuscript materials such as Beckett's letters, drafts, notes on philosophy, psychology and art, and his 'German diaries' augment a detailed account of the submerged sources that Beckett appropriated to the evolving needs of his abstract dramatic art.

‘Dialogues on Beckett’ is a collection of 12 conversations about 12 plays by Samuel Beckett, discussions about the meaning of life and the universe between an agnostic and a Christian, based on a close reading of the text. It is also based on the thesis that Beckett’s main concern in his plays is Christian theology or, more broadly, the religious interpretation of the world. All his plays are an argument with that interpretation; in particular, they question the idea of theodicy and the philosophy of consolation. The aim of ‘Dialogues on Beckett’ is to make the reader aware of this essential theme in the playwright’s work, to interpret it in this light and to show his original approach to the subject. Beckett argues that we live in a post-Christian era. But for him this knowledge is no reason for joy; rather, it is a source of sadness, fear and even despair.

"In The Black Shore, O'Neill finally expresses his criticism of Ireland, Irish nationalism, and Irish Catholicism, often in hilariously satiric scenes and with a cast of characters as ugly and unsavory as any to be found in modern Anglo-Irish literature. The novel is also an Irish love story of sorts and traces the perverse relationship between the local doctor and the niece of the parish priest - he, the confirmed and vocal atheist in a fanatically Catholic country, who is sadly incapable of expressing love and she, the wife who, looking for romance and glamour, in the bogs of Ireland, sees herself the possible instrument of his salvation. The Black Shore is also a fitting final statement of the man Joseph O'Neill who spent twenty-five years buried in the bureaucracy of the Irish Department of Education, loathing the petty, bourgeois life he lived, longing for the heroic past, for the time - if it ever existed - when a man's thoughts and actions functioned in accord."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. In the mid-1930s, two Irish Americans travel to the Albanian highlands with an early model of a marvelous invention, the tape recorder. Their mission? To discover how Homer could have composed works as brilliant and as long as The Iliad and The Odyssey without ever putting pen to paper. The answer, they believe, can be found only in Albania, the last remaining habitat of the oral epic. But immediately upon their arrival, the scholars’ seemingly arcane research excites suspicion and puts them at the center of ethnic strife in the Balkans. Mistaken for foreign spies, they are placed under surveillance and are dogged by gossip and intrigue. It isn’t until a fierce-eyed monk from the Serbian side of the mountains makes his appearance that the scholars glimpse the full political import of their search for the key to the Homeric question.
