Excerpt from A Fresh Approach to the Psalms The following chapters do not make any claim to originality. There is nothing they contain which is not familiar to Old Testament scholars but it is hoped that they may be of interest and use to many who are not experts, for the writer has been at pains, apart from his own researches, to consult a number of the most modern commentaries on the Psalms, as well as some which are not of recent date. Moreover, some subjects are dealt with, which, for Obvious reasons, are not discussed in Commentaries; but which, nevertheless, have a certain bearing on the study of the Psalms. Readers who are not in a position to consult many books, may be glad to have these subjects placed before them we mean, such subjects as the music of the ancient east; music among the Hebrews; the liturgical use of the psalms the psalms in the worship of the ancient synagogue the origin of the synagogue; the psalms in the Christian Church. Psalm 93God acts within every moment and creates the world with each breath. He speaks from the center of the universe, in the silence beyond all though. Mighter than the crash of a thunderstorm, mighter than the roar of the sea, is God's voice silently speaking in the depths of the listening heart.

Uriel Simon describes the fascinating controversy that raged from the tenth to the twelfth centuries regarding the theological status and literary genre of the Psalms. Saadiah Gaon, who initiated the controversy, claimed that the Psalter was a second Torah—the Lord's word to David—and by no means man's prayer to God. Salmon ben Yerucham and Yefet ben Ali insisted on the Karaite view that the Book of Psalms was the prophetic common prayerbook of Israel. Totally opposing both of these concepts, Rabbi Moses Ibn Giqatilah regarded the Psalms as non-prophetic prayers authored by different poets, beginning with David and ending with the captive Levites in the Babylonian exile. Finally, Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra reverted to the belief held by the Talmudic sages—that the Psalms were Israel's divinely inspired and most sacred poetry. The book also includes the full text of a previously unknown introduction to Ibn Ezra's lost commentary on the Psalms, which is much more elaborate and revealing than the introduction to his familiar classical commentary.

Excerpt from Ten Studies in the Psalms There is, perhaps, no part of the Old Testament which speaks so simply and directly to the universal heart as the Psalter. Yet even the most familiar psalms come home to us with increased freshness and power when, by sympathetic study, we have traveled back to the world in which their writers stood, and learned to look out upon it with their eyes. The short studies in this volume are an attempt to interpret, in this way, a few of the psalms that deal with important aspects of the religious life, and to show their vital bearing upon the life of to - day. In their doubts, struggles, and aspirations, those ancient men are very near us, and they speak to us with an accent that is strangely modern. I have tried to make this plain in the course of the exposition, and to illustrate their kinship with us by quotation from modern writers. The treatment of the psalms here selected is expository. But, without. Being didactic or homiletic, I have at the same time sought to make it practically helpful, by gathering up the study of each psalm in a series of personal questions, which are intended both to carry the reader into the heart of the psalm, and also to enable him to search his own inner life. I desire here to express my obligation to Messrs. Charles Serib ner's Sons for their generous courtesy in allowing me to reprint, from my volume on The Messages of the Psalmists in The Mes sages of the Bible Series the paraphrase of the psalms here selected for study.
