p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."
The Mathematica Handbook provides all the Mathematica commands and objects along with typical examples of them. This handbook is intended as a reference of all built-in Mathematica Version 2.0 objects to both beginning and advanced users of Mathematica. The book contains commands and examples of those commands found in the packages of Mathematica, a system for doing mathematics on a computer. The Preface describes how to use the entries of The Handbook and then briefly discusses elementary rules of Mathematica syntax, defining functions, and using commands that are contained in the standard Mathematica packages. Subsequent chapters provide commands for calculations in Calculus, Statistics, and Numerical Math. The commands in these sections are listed within each package, and the packages are listed alphabetically within each folder (or directory) as well. The book will be of use to engineers, computer scientists, physical scientists, mathematicians, business professionals, and students.
The Talmud is important because it sets forth the law and theology of Judaism in its authoritative statement, continuing for centuries to attract commentators and forming the curriculum for the culture of Judaism. In these pages, important and representative compositions afford an encounter with this classic, ancient document in its own terms and framework, but in English translation. Examples include the following: Law: "An Eye for an Eye" Bavli Baba Qamma 8:1/83b-84b; "In the case of anything of which I am liable to take care, I am deemed to render possible whatever damage it may do" Bavli Baba Qamma 1:2/9b-11a; "He who steals food and feeds what he stole to his children, or left it to them Theology: "All Israel has a portion in the world to come" Bavli Sanhedrin 11:1-2/90a-92a; "When will the Messiah come?" With sales of more than 1.4 million copies, Kay Arthur’s deeply enriching New Inductive Study Series is nearing completion. In this newest study, readers will mine gems of truth from the book of Jeremiah using the hands-on process of observation, interpretation, and application to dig through the text. Jeremiah’s warnings to a nation that has turned its back on the Lord echo through the ages and speak to cultures today. As readers see the prophet’s heartbreak at the nation’s apostasy, his sense of urgency, and the resistance he faces, they will identify with God’s people throughout the ages and receive assurance that nothing happening today is taking God by surprise. Even in the darkest seasons, readers can be confident that evil will be judged, righteousness will be rewarded, and God’s plans for His people—to give them a future and a hope—stand firm.
The dissolution of the French Empire and the ensuing rush of immigration have led to the formation of diasporas and immigrant cultures that have transformed French society and the immigrants themselves. Transnational Spaces and Identities in the Francophone World examines the impact of this postcolonial immigration on identity in France and in the Francophone world, which has encompassed parts of Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and the Americas. Immigrants bear cultural traditions within themselves, transform ?host? communities, and are, in turn, transformed. These migrations necessarily complicate ideals of national literature, culture, and history, forcing a reexamination and a rearticulation of these ideals. ø Exploring a variety of texts informed by these transnational conceptions of identity and space, the contributors to this volume reveal the vitality of Francophone studies within a broad range of disciplines, periods, and settings. They remind us that the idea and reality of Francophonie is not a late twentieth-century phenomenon but something that grows out of long-term interactions between colonizer and colonized and between peoples of different nationalities, ethnicities, and religions. Truly interdisciplinary, this collection engages conceptions of identity with respect to their physical, geographic, ethnic, and imagined realities.
Discipleship and sonship are intimately connected. Jesus was a Son to His Father and a rabbi to His disciples. His goal was to teach His disciples how to be sons by introducing them to the Father and calling them to follow Him and imitate Him as Gods beloved Son. They were to be His replicas on earth, training others to follow Him. Jesus was a Jew, born and raised in the Jewish language and culture of His day. Out of this richness He invited and trained uneducated men to take His yoke, learn from Him and go into the world to set people free from their yokes of bondage. Westernization has obscured the Biblical meaning of discipleship and spawned believers who have lost the truth and simplicity of following Jesus. The church has been fragmented by theology and tradition instead of being united by the Spirit of Jesus. Jesus stripped Judaism of its impositions by taking people back to the Torah and explaining what God meant, not what rabbis imposed on it. This book is an attempt to re-introduce believers to Jesuss yoke by teaching them to embrace the spirit of Torah, which reflects, not rules or religion but mercy, based on the love of the Father.
