Still considered essential reading for serious thinkers on religion more than a century and a half after it was written, this seminal work of modern theology, first published in 1845, presents a history of Catholic doctrine from the days of the Apostles to the time of its writing, and follows with specific examples of how the doctrine has not only survived corruption but grown stronger through defending itself against it, and is, therefore, the true religion. This classic of Christian apologetics, considered a foundational work of 19th-century intellectualism on par with Darwin's Origin of Species, is must reading not only for the faithful but also for anyone who wishes to be well educated in the fundamentals of modern thought.

"From 1983 to 1990 the Lutheran/Roman Catholic dialogue in the United States of America discussed the topic 'The One Mediator, the Saints, and Mary.' This, the eighth round of theological dialogue, has tested the doctrinal implications of the fundamental affirmation and material convergences of the seventh round, the topic of which was 'Justification by Faith'. . . . In testing the rule contained in the common christological affirmation of the seventh round, the dialogue has made an earnest search for further areas of convergence. . . ." "We now submit this document to the authorities, theologians, pastors, and people of our supporting churches for their reflection and judgment. We await their reaction to our findings and recommendations toward unity." -from the Preface by J. Francis Stafford and H. George Anderson J. Francis Stafford is the archbishop of Denver and the Catholic Co-chairman of the dialogue. H. George Anderson is the president of Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, and served as the Lutheran Co-chairman of the eighth round of the dialogue. Joseph A. This book concerns the politics of religion as expressed through apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Dzhublyk in Transcarpathian Ukraine. The analysis provides insights into the present position of Transcarpathia in regional, Ukrainewide, and European struggles for identity and political belonging. The way in which the apparitions site has been conceived and managed raises questions concerning the fate of religious communities during and after socialism, the significance of national projects for religious organizations, and the politics of religious management in a situation in which local religious commitments are relatively strong and religious organizations are relatively weak. The analysis contributes to the ethnography and history of this particular region and of the post-socialist world in general. The changing status of the apparition site over the years allows investigation of the questions concerning authority, legitimacy, and power in religious organizations, especially in relation to management of religious experiences.

This work explores the extension of papal infallibility with regard to its object (doctrine of faith and morals) and with regard to its act (ordinary teaching and extraordinary or solemn definition). Two main questions are taken up in the first part: whether it is certain that the pope is able to speak infallibly about doctrines pertaining to faith or morals which are not directly included in the deposit of faith (e.g. the canonization of saints); and secondly, whether this secondary object of infallibility extends to everything pertaining to faith and morals (so as to include, for example, every particular moral norm of the natural law). The second part is then primarily concerned with the question as to whether the pope is infallible only in the exercise of his extraordinary magisterium or whether the ordinary papal magisterium might also be infallible in some cases.
