Important differences persist between rural and urban America, despite profound economic changes and the notorious homogenizing influence of the media. As Glenn V. Fuguitt, David L. Brown, and Calvin L. Beale show in Rural and Small Town America, the much-heralded disappearance of small town life has not come to pass, and the nonmetropolitan population still constitutes a significant dimension of our nation's social structure. Based on census and other recent survey data, this impressive study provides a detailed and comparative picture of rural America. The authors find that size of place is a critical demographic factor, affecting population composition (rural populations are older and more predominantly male than urban populations), the distribution of poverty (urban poverty tends to be concentrated in neighborhoods; rural poverty may extend over large blocks of counties), and employment opportunities (job quality and income are lower in rural areas, though rural occupational patterns are converging with those of urban areas). In general, rural and small town America still lags behind urban America on many indicators of social well-being. Pointing out that rural life is no longer synonymous with farming, the authors explore variations among nonmetropolitan populations. They also trace the impact of major national trends—the nonmetropolitan growth spurt of the 1970s and its current reversal, for example, or changing fertility rates—on rural life and on the relationship between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan communities. By describing the special characteristics and needs of rural populations as well as the features they share with urban America, this book clearly demonstrates that a more accurate picture of nonmetropolitan life is essential to understanding the larger dynamics of our society. Excerpt from A Summary of Selected Characteristics of the Urban and Rural Populations, by State, 1960 Data were selected to permit-rural-urban comparisons in regard to some of the more important social and economic characteristics of the population. This report is intended as a convenient source of comparative data on the farm and nonfarm populations, and not as an analysis of rural - urban differences. Information is presented under four broad categories: (1) Demographic characteristics, including size of population, median age, average size of family, and measures of fertility and mobil ity. (2) Economic characteristics, such as measures of unemployment, occupational distributions, and age, earnings, and weeks worked for employed males. In the case of the last three measures, census data were not published by urban - rural residence, and information is shown for the State as a whole. (3) Educational characteristics, including information on school enrollment, retardation in school, .estimates of school dropouts, and measures of educational attainment. (4) Housing characteristics and availability of facilities, including the proportion of housing units in deteriorated or dilapidated condition, and the proportion reporting the availability of home freezers, automobiles, and telephones. These three facilities are among the items included in the farm operator level-of-living index and supply a basis for comparing the relative position of the farm and nonfarm populations in regard to availability of the facilities. This book explores how the recent restructuring of farming and industry has affected economic and social equality in the United States. The author explains how the farm sector has undergone a dramatic restructuring with profound effects. Moderate-size family farms, the mainstay of American agriculture, have declined during the postwar period and are now under severe financial stress. Large-scale industrialized farms -- "the factories in the field," often run by corporations -- continue to expand their share of agricultural sales while small farms operated on a part-time basis appear to be replacing traditional family farming. Lobao shows that public concern about farm restructuring is indeed warranted and that the nation now appears to be losing its most beneficial farms as well as industries. While local and regional social and economic forces and state policy can be brought to bear on these trends, Lobao particulary focuses on how community empowerment and broad-based political coalitions offer the most promise for fundamental change.
