Excerpt from A Brief German Grammar: With References to His Larger Grammar His work has been prepared at the instance of many teachers, and because there appeared to be a call for a German grammar which should present the most important facts 'of the language in the briefest form consistent with accuracy and clearness of statement. It follows, as a matter of course, the same general method, and uses the same term inology, as the author's larger work (a Compendious German Grammar, etc., H. Holt (it which has been approved by wide use now during more than fifteen years; and it may be used as an introduction to the other. In order to facilitate the transition, and for the convenience of those who, while using it, desire to refer to the fuller statements and explana tions of the larger grammar, the numbers of the latter's para graphs corresponding to those of this volume are added in parenthesis to its own paragraph-numbers. The exercises may be used according to the discretion of the teacher and the special needs and capacities of his class and, where immediate advance to reading is desired, the english-into-german exer cises may in many cases be well omitted until the grammar comes to be gone over a second time. The selected sentences at the end are intended to form the ground for such further grammatical drill as shall be found desirable. Excerpt from Short German Grammar The illustrative examples and also the exercises have been purposely made to contain simple and common words which occur often in ordinary prose. The exercises can of course easily be increased by the teacher, if more are desired. The rules for the order of words are given as occasion arises, and illustrated in the exercises, and a brief summary is given later for convenience of reference. It is hoped that this subject has thus been made easier for the student. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The grammatical material has been arranged with a view to its convenient use in the exercises, and with the Object of facilitating the rapid acquisition of a reading knowledge of the language. The elementary statements of grammatical theory in the earlier part of the book have been supplemented and summarized in the more advanced lessons, thus enabling the learner to review and amplify the knowledge previously acquired in detail. Excerpt from Elementary German Grammar: With Exercises IN the present work the spelling of German is that which has long been the usual or standard system in German literature. This orthography was for the most part but little affected by the isolated efforts of scholars to secure the adoption of a simpler and more self-consistent spelling, a system more in accordance with phonetic principles, and with the historical development of the German tongue. Of late, however, a partial modification of the received spelling of a considerable number of words has rapidly gained ground in German literature, in accordance with rules sanctioned by the Prussian Minister of Public Instruction in 1880. The principal words modified by this 8) stem may be arranged under the following heads. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
