Excerpt from A Bibliography of Canadian Fiction Oxly those who have had experience in pioneer bibliographical work know of the difficulties connected with such a task. For various reasons it has been impossible to get information about many authors past and even present. We have tried to make our material as complete as possible, but it is very probable that some names and works have been omitted which should have found a place in our lists; also, on the other hand, some may have been mentioned that should not have found a place in the list. For all such errors of omis sion and commission we ask indulgence, and for all corrections we shall be very grateful. We have tried to make our data as complete as possible in Sections I. To III. In Section IV. We do not profess to have made more than a beginning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from English-Canadian Literature AS Canada a voice of her own in literature distinct H from that of England P This question has attracted a good deal of attention in Canada and has been the subject of numerous discussions in home magazines and reviews. In Great Britain, however, the critical periodicals apparently have not yet recognized a purely Canadian1 literature. While these periodicals have frequently reviewed the literatures of Norway, Sweden, Russia, the United States, Spain, Italy and other countries, no British critic so far seems to have thought Canadian literary achievement of sufficient importance to treat it seriously as a whole or to look for its distinctive note. The United States has a literature fine and forceful, and though the language is the language of England the voice is her own: her writers have a vigorous national note, and narrate and sing the achievements of their ancestors and contemporaries in a manner characteristic of a nation that in so short a time has attained a giant's proportions. Has Canada such a voice? The answer is that she has not one of great volume, it is true; but, as we shall see, in poetry at least, the Canadian note is clear and distinct and the performance is of good quality and of permanent value. Excerpt from Handbook of Canadian Literature (English) Frequently I heard the statement made by men who ought to know, that Canada had no literature of its own, and in order to supply this deficiency of our intellectual life we had to depend upon the literary talent of Britain and that of our neighbors to the south of us. But in coming into Canada has the British race lost its ambitions and mental vigor? If so, why? The assertion is not true obviously with regard to the subduing of the forest and the cultivating of the virgin soil of this rich and vast country. Excerpt from Canadian Catalogue of Books After several unavoidable delays, the writer has the pleasure of presenting the first number of the Canadian Catalogue. It will not be claimed that it is by any means a complete Catalogue of Canadian Books, but only titles, so arranged as to be easily referred to. The proposed idea is, to continue issuing the parts until (as near as possible), a complete list may be obtained of all the books and pamphlets printed, or published in the Dominion, from the first printed book in 1767 to the end of 1895, and from this date to issue annual lists for each year, beginning with 1896. The prices quoted are all taken from Canadian lists, and are the highest given, and, on the whole, may be considered fairly current prices. Excerpt from Books and Pamphlets Published in Canada, Up to the Year Eighteen Hundred and Thirty-Seven: Copies of Which Are in the Public Reference Library, Toronto, Canada This is the first of what we hope will be a Series of Contri butions to Canadian Bibliography issued by the Reference Department of the Public Library of Toronto. The idea which actuates us in this work arises from the situation which faces one who wishes to know not only what was published in early times in Canada, but where these publications may be consulted. It is useful to ourselves to have a classified list of these books and pamphlets; we think that it may be of interest and value to other libraries, and to the increasingly large number of people in Canada who are becoming interested in her early history.
