Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is an increasingly applied technology for particle removal in water and wastewater treatment. In DAF tiny air bubbles attach to the particles, which float to the surface, forming flocs which can be periodically removed to a sludge channel. The technique originated in the early 1900s, but has steadily widened its application across municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment, earning a reputation for reliability, controllability and effectiveness. The aim of the Helsinki conference was to provide an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to examine and discuss current developments and applications of DAF technology in water and wastewater treatment. From the 58 oral and poster presentations, 26 papers have been selected for these proceedings. The papers have been divided into four themes: drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment, industrial and trade applications, theory and modelling.

Over the last decade the Latin American Workshop and Seminar on Anaerobic Digestion has become not only the premier regional forum for discussion, integration and exchange of experience among professionals active in this field, but has acquired a wider reputation. Not only does it contribute significantly to the diffusion of anaerobic technologies and processes in Latin America, but it provides a forum for the work of the world's experts in anaerobic digestion. From the many contributions to the 6th workshop and seminar 41 papers of high quality have been selected. They range over the following topics: traditional and innovative configuration of anaerobic reactors; experience with pilot- and full-scale anaerobic treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater; anaerobic digestion of solid waste; anaerobic degradation of recalcitrant compounds; anaerobic biofilm and granular sludge; pretreatment of anaerobic effluents and integration of anaerobic-aerobic processes; and operation and control of anaerobic reactors.

Selected Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Systems Analysis and Computing in Water Quality Management, Held in Gent, Belgium, 18-20 September 2000. The focus of the IWA Specialist Group on Systems Analysis and Computing is essentially methodological. Its goal is to foster discussion of the interdisciplinary issues cutting across the many topics of interest within IWA. Consequently, the themes of the symposium did not reflect specific concerns with sewers, or wastewater treatment, or river basin management, or surface water quality, or groundwater contamination. Rather the symposium was organised along the lines of new models, decision support systems, uncertainty and risk analysis, integrated urban wastewater systems, operations and control, sensors and monitoring, optimal experimental design methodologies, model selection and calibration techniques, and time-series analysis. Evidently, the papers may each have case-specific aspects but they also highlight matters of methodology that are common to all, with a distinctly interdisciplinary character. There was an open call for papers, resulting in abstracts from 30 countries around the world. Papers for oral and poster presentation at the symposium were selected by the Programme Committee from full papers. They were reviewed again and 47 of them were finally included in these proceedings. Notably, 8 of the contributions were selected among the posters through a competition announced prior to the Symposium. The collection of papers in these proceedings are a comprehensive update that will prove invaluable for those working in the fields of environmental engineering, river basin management, aquatic ecology, process optimisation, data mining, planning and monitoring.
