Excerpt from 1976 Annual of the Ninety-Ninth Annual Session of the Carolina Baptist Association, North Carolina: Held With Etowah Baptist Church and Mount Moriah Baptist Church, October 25-26, 1977 He graduated from Mars Hill College, entered Wake Forest College to study law, but God had other plans for him: He made his decision to enter the ministry while there. He was appointed as a State Missionary in Bland County, Va. In 1902. He served as pastor of the Clear Fork Baptist Church besides the other duties on the field. Three churches were organized under his leadership while serving there. After seven years he resigned and returned to his native state. He went to serve the Fairview Baptist Church in Buncombe Association where he served eight years as pastor. During that time a new edifice was built. Then he went to serve the Barnardsville Baptist Church in Barnardsville. He served other smaller churches part time during this time. Forks of Ivey was one of these churches in Madison County. This was where he preached his first sermon when he started preaching in 1899. Later he came back to the Fairview Baptist Church where he served five more years. Reverend Phillips became the pastor of the 'east Flat Rock Baptist Church in the Carolina Association in 1925. He served this church until retiring in 1963. It had a membership of 219. Missions gifts (home foreign) was only In 1962 the membership had grown to 453 and the offering to missions had grown to During his pastorate, a new building was completed. Before-his retirement, he led the church in building a new pastorium for the pastor and family who would be his successor. Vacation He shall be entitled to two full weeks of vacation time, each year, with pay, provided he begins work for the Association not later than July 1. Vacation leave must be taken within the Calendar Year, except that as much as one week may be carried over to the subsequent year, upon the approval of the Associational Executive Committee. He shall be entitled to an additional day of vacation time for each full year of service, up to a maximum of four full weeks. If he comes into the employment of the Association later than July 1, he shall be given vacation time in proportion to the part of the year he has Worked. If he resigns from his position with an earned vacation, time shall be credited salary - wise. All vacation leave is to be arranged with the knowledge of the Chairman of the Associational Executive Committee. G. Sick leave He shall be allowed Sick Leave, with pay, for a period of fifteen days annually. The total credit thus accumulated shall not exceed 90 days. Any exception in cases of illness may be considered by the Associational Executive Committee. H. Holidays All legal holidays shall be observed with the office closed, unless special needs require that work be done during that time. In that case, time may be taken off at a more convenient time, with the approval of thechairman of the Associational Executive Committee.
