From 11 to 15 December 1972 a group of historians from many European countries assembled in Groningen to commemorate the centenary of Johan Huizinga's birth in that city on 7 December 1872. The conference was not intended simply as a tribute to the memory of a great historian but also as an attempt to assess the sig nificance of his work for the present generation. It was supported by generous grants from the Stichting oud-studentenfonds van 1906 at Groningen, the Gro ninger Universiteitsfonds, and the Ministry of Education and Science. We are pleased to be able to publish all the papers read at the conference, together with Dr. Jansonius's study of Huizinga's style, written for another occasion. The material is presented in a roughly chronological order. The first three papers, which examine Huizinga's intellectual and literary points of departure, are followed by another three dealing with The Waning of the Middle Ages. A special paper is de voted to Huizinga's Erasmian studies. The next three authors investigate the prob lems which preoccupied Huizinga during the 1930s. Three final papers examine general aspects of his work.

Edited upon historical principles by Donald H. Reiman and Neil Fraistat, the multi volume edition will offer more poems and fragments than any previous collective edition, arranged in the order of their first circulation. These texts are followed by the most extensive collations hitherto available and detailed commentaries that describe their contextual origins and subsequent reception. Rejected passages of released poems appear as supplements to those poems, while other poetic drafts that Shelley rejected or left incomplete at his death will be grouped according to either their publication histories or the notebooks in which they survive. Volume One includes Shelley's first four works containing poetry (all prepared for publication before his expulsion from Oxford), as well as "The Devil's Walk" (circulated in August 1812), and a series of short poems that he sent to friends between 1809 and 1814, including a bawdy satire on his parents and "Oh wretched mortal," a poem never before published. An appendix discusses poems lost or erroneously attributed to the young Shelley. "These early poems are important not only biographically but also aesthetically, for they provide detailed evidence of how Shelley went about learning his craft as a poet, and the differences between their tone and that of his mature short poetry index a radical change in his self-image . . . This book examines the relationship between social class and mental illness in Northern Europe during the 20th century. Contributors explore the socioeconomic status of mental patients, the possible influence of social class on the diagnoses and treatment they received in psychiatric institutions, and how social class affected the ways in which the problems of minorities, children and various ‘deviants’ and ‘misfits’ were evaluated and managed by mental health professionals. The basic message of the book is that, even in developing welfare states founded on social equality, social class has been a significant factor that has affected mental health in many different ways – and still does.

This is the first significant study of the entrepreneurial society created by the Welsh coal boom (most books up to now having concentrated upon the workers and the unions). Using the Porth-Pontypridd area as its example, it looks closely at the networks of power created by the second-generation middle classes of the Valleys towns, and at the often hair-raising business methods that they used. Close examination of individuals, and of family groups, gives a vivid sense of the reality of the relationships and contacts, and of the nature of the society in which they moved.
