The colorful history of the Theosophical Society in America. Although Helena P. Blavatsky and Henry S. Olcott founded the Theosophical Society in New York in 1875, they left the country in 1878 for India, where they established the international headquarters. It might seem that the three short years would not be long enough to establish firm roots here, yet by 1886 there were 14 branches in cities as far flung as St. Louis, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The American Section was formally chartered in 1886, and this book was published in 1987 -- a century as full of events and change for the Society as for the country itself.

Blavatsky, the mysterious Russian woman who was the spiritual founder of the Theosophical Society. The rise in popularity of this belief over the last century and a half is directly traceable to the impact of the nineteenth century's largest and most influential Western esoteric movement, the Theosophical Society. In Recycled Lives, Julie Chajes looks at the rebirth doctrines of the matriarch of Theosophy, the controversial occultist Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (1831-1891). Examining her teachings in detail, Chajes places them in the context of multiple dimensions of nineteenth-century intellectual and cultural life. In particular, she explores Blavatsky's readings (and misreadings) of Spiritualist currents, scientific theories, Platonism, and Hindu and Buddhist thought. These in turn are set in relief against broader nineteenth-century American and European trends. The chapters come together to reveal the contours of a modern perspective on reincarnation that is inseparable from the nineteenth-century discourses within which it emerged, and which has shaped how people in the West tend to view reincarnation today.
Originally published in 1910, this little book by Catherine W. Christie opens the door to the vast body of Theosophical teachings. Acknowledging in her introduction that the book was "imperfect and inadequate, when viewed in the light of the sublime fullness of the Ancient Wisdom," hoped that it "may interest some who would be discouraged at the sight of a fuller or more learned exposition." She continued: "I have endeavored, by the use of simple language and a simple style, so to present these teachings that my readers can use them in their daily life, and thus prove their truth and value to themselves." The book begins with an overview of the Ancient Wisdom. It then covers the topics of brotherhood; reincarnation and karma; alchemy and magic; our mental, astral and physical bodies; the etheric double; the astral and mental planes of nature; the method of returning to earth-life; life in the new bodies; the power of thought and thought-forms; fairies and nature-spirits; action and motive; and the goal of humanity. Marcia Morris, who wrote the Foreword for this new edition, found a copy of Theosophy for Beginners in the late 1960s. It has been her most treasured companion on the Path ever since.
The essays in Imagining the East explore how Theosophists during the formative period imagined the religions and cultures of the East. The authors examine the relationship of such representations to orientalism, the history of ideas, politics, and culture at large and discuss how these esoteric or theosophical representations mirrored conditions and values current in nineteenth-century mainstream intellectual culture. The essays also look at how the early Theosophical Society's representations of the East differed from mainstream 'orientalism' and how the Theosophical Society's mission in India was distinct from that of British colonialism and Christian missionaries.
