In Commutative Algebra certain /-adic filtrations of Noetherian rings, i.e. the so-called Zariski rings, are at the basis of singularity theory. Apart from that it is mainly in the context of Homological Algebra that filtered rings and the associated graded rings are being studied not in the least because of the importance of double complexes and their spectral sequences. Where non-commutative algebra is concerned, applications of the theory of filtrations were mainly restricted to the study of enveloping algebras of Lie algebras and, more extensively even, to the study of rings of differential operators. It is clear that the operation of completion at a filtration has an algebraic genotype but a topological fenotype and it is exactly the symbiosis of Algebra and Topology that works so well in the commutative case, e.g. ideles and adeles in number theory or the theory of local fields, Puisseux series etc, .... . In Non commutative algebra the bridge between Algebra and Analysis is much more narrow and it seems that many analytic techniques of the non-commutative kind are still to be developed. Nevertheless there is the magnificent example of the analytic theory of rings of differential operators and 1J-modules a la Kashiwara-Shapira.

This monograph strives to introduce a solid foundation on the usage of Gr”bner bases in ring theory by focusing on noncommutative associative algebras defined by relations over a field K. It also reveals the intrinsic structural properties of Gr”bner bases, presents a constructive PBW theory in a quite extensive context and, along the routes built via the PBW theory, the book demonstrates novel methods of using Gr”bner bases in determining and recognizing many more structural properties of algebras, such as the Gelfand?Kirillov dimension, Noetherianity, (semi-)primeness, PI-property, finiteness of global homological dimension, Hilbert series, (non-)homogeneous p-Koszulity, PBW-deformation, and regular central extension. With a self-contained and constructive Gr”bner basis theory for algebras with a skew multiplicative K-basis, numerous illuminating examples are constructed in the book for illustrating and extending the topics studied. Moreover, perspectives of further study on the topics are prompted at appropriate points. This book can be of considerable interest to researchers and graduate students in computational (computer) algebra, computational (noncommutative) algebraic geometry; especially for those working on the structure theory of rings, algebras and their modules (representations).

Glider Representations offer several applications across different fields within Mathematics, thereby motivating the introduction of this new glider theory and opening numerous doors for future research, particularly with respect to more complex filtration chains. Features • Introduces new concepts in the Theory of Rings and Modules • Suitable for researchers and graduate students working in this area, and as supplementary reading for courses in Group Theory, Ring Theory, Lie Algebras and Sheaf Theory • The first book to explicitly outline this new approach to gliders and fragments and associated concepts

This volume is the Proceedings of the Third Korea-China-Japan Inter national Symposium on Ring Theory held jointly with the Second Korea Japan Joint Ring Theory Seminar which took place at the historical resort area of Korea, Kyongju, June 28-July 3, 1999. It also includes articles by some invited mathematicians who were unable to attend the conference. Over 90 mathematicians from 12 countries attended this conference. The conference is held every 4 years on a rotating basis. The first con ference was held in 1991 at Guilin, China. In 1995 the second conference took place in Okayama, Japan. At the second conference it was decided to include Korea, who hosted this conference of 1999. During the past century Ring Theory has diversified into many subar eas. This is reflected in these articles from over 25 well-known mathemati cians covering a broad range of topics, including: Classical Ring Theory, Module Theory, Representation Theory, and the theory of Hopf Algebras. Among these peer reviewed papers are invited survey articles as well as research articles. The survey articles provide an overview of various areas for researchers looking for a new or related field to investigate, while the research articles give the flavor of current research. We feel that the variety of related topics will stimulate interaction between researchers. Moreover the Open Problems section provides guidance for future research. This book should prove attractive to a wide audience of algebraists. Gary F. Birkenmeier, Lafayette, U. S. A.

This self-contained monograph is the first to feature the intersection of the structure theory of noncommutative associative algebras and the algorithmic aspect of Groebner basis theory. A double filtered-graded transfer of data in using noncommutative Groebner bases leads to effective exploitation of the solutions to several structural-computational problems, e.g., an algorithmic recognition of quadric solvable polynomial algebras, computation of GK-dimension and multiplicity for modules, and elimination of variables in noncommutative setting. All topics included deal with algebras of (q-)differential operators as well as some other operator algebras, enveloping algebras of Lie algebras, typical quantum algebras, and many of their deformations.

The book develops some algebraic structure theory based upon properties observed on the Weyl algebra. Filtered and graded rings, finiteness conditions, localizations and rings of fractions, finiteness conditions on rings and modules, homological dimension and the Gelfand-Kirillov dimensions, simple Noetherian algebras and semisimples rings and modules are considered.

From this point of view, it is ideal to devise a concept of space and its geometry that is fundamentally noncommutative. Providing a clear introduction to noncommutat
