DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe present book includes several contributions aiming a deeper understanding of the basic processes in the operation of CO2 lasers (lasing on non-traditional bands, frequency stabilization, photoacoustic spectroscopy) and achievement of new systems (CO2 lasers generating ultrashort pulses or high average power, lasers based on diffusion cooled V-fold geometry, transmission of IR radiation through hollow core microstructured fibers). The second part of the book is dedicated to applications in material processing (heat treatment, welding, synthesis of new materials, micro fluidics) and in medicine (clinical applications, dentistry, non-ablative therapy, acceleration of protons for cancer treatment).

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe revised edition of this important reference volume presents an expanded overview of the analytical and numerical approaches employed when exploring and developing modern laser materials processing techniques. The book shows how general principles can be used to obtain insight into laser processes, whether derived from fundamental physical theory or from direct observation of experimental results. The book gives readers an understanding of the strengths and limitations of simple numerical and analytical models that can then be used as the starting-point for more elaborate models of specific practical, theoretical or commercial value. Following an introduction to the mathematical formulation of some relevant classes of physical ideas, the core of the book consists of chapters addressing key applications in detail: cutting, keyhole welding, drilling, arc and hybrid laser-arc welding, hardening, cladding and forming. The second edition includes a new a chapter on glass cutting with lasers, as employed in the display industry. A further addition is a chapter on meta-modelling, whose purpose is to construct fast, simple and reliable models based on appropriate sources of information. It then makes it easy to explore data visually and is a convenient interactive tool for scientists to improve the quality of their models and for developers when designing their processes. As in the first edition, the book ends with an updated introduction to comprehensive numerical simulation. Although the book focuses on laser interactions with materials, many of the principles and methods explored can be applied to thermal modelling in a variety of different fields and at different power levels. It is aimed principally however at academic and industrial researchers and developers in the field of laser technology.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Sixth International Symposium on Gas Flow and Chemical Lasers (GCL) was held in Jerusalem, Israel, on September 8-12, 1986. The charm and beauty of Jerusalem and the unique blending of ancient and modern made this Symposium an enjoyable experience for the 165 participants and the accompanying persons. Yet, it seems that the invited and contributed papers presented at the Symposium were equally attractive so that most of the participants attended most sessions, resisting the temptations outside the session hall. Indeed, many speakers presented up-to-date results that were obtained, or cleared, just a few days before the Symposium. This volume is a compi lation of 19 invited and 61 contributed papers and of a panel discussion on the prospects for short wavelength chemical lasers held at the closing session of the Symposium. This discussion is presented as recorded in order to re tain the flavour of spontaneous presentation at the risk - or advantage - of presenting some venturous ideas, and the danger of misquoting. In editing the book, a deductive approach has been attempted. The book starts with some fundamental issues, namely fluid dynamics and optics, and then deals with the design, diagnostics, propagation and applications of various gas laser systems, covering the wavelength spectrum from XUV to infrared. Then follow recent developments of general interest to the laser community and the book concludes with an eye to the future, i.e., with a section on short wavelength chemical lasers.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book examines the application of nanoscience and nanotechnology in military defence strategies. Both historical and current perspectives on military technologies are discussed. The book provides comprehensive details on current trends in the application of nanotechnology to ground, air, and naval specializations. Furthermore, nanotechnology-enabled high energy explosives and propellants, chemical, biological, radiation, and nuclear threats and their detection/protection, and camouflage and stealth for signature management of military targets in multispectral wavelength signals are analyzed. The book also covers nanotechnology-enabled armor and platforms, which may serve as lightweight and high mechanical strength options in contrast to conventional systems. Finally, the book also emphasizes future military applications of nanotechnology and its integration into ‘smart’ materials. Provides comprehensive details on trends in the application of nanotechnology to ground, air, and naval defence systems; Examines the application of nanoscience and nanotechnology in military defence strategies; Offers pathways and research avenues for development of nanotechnology and materials applications in military capacities.
