“Remarkably detailed . . . It is a tribute to Wladyslaw Gnys, the decorated ace pilot, but also to the charming and humble man himself.” —Hamilton Magazine Polish pilot Wladyslaw (Wladek) Gnys was credited with shooting down the first two German aircraft of World War II on September 1, 1939. On this day, as Gnys’ squadron took off near Kraków to intercept the German invaders, German Stuka pilot Frank Neubert attacked, killing the captain. Wladek, who barely survived himself, evaded the pursuing Stukas and went on to make the first Allied kills, while Neubert was credited with the first aerial kill of the war. Fifty years after the invasion of Poland, in the summer of 1989, Gnys and Neubert met and shook hands, making news around the world. They reconciled their differences and remained friends until their deaths. This event symbolized the prevailing friendly coexistence between Poland and Germany. Written by his son Stefan and drawing from his logbooks, this highly illustrated biography of Wladek Gnys is the most in-depth account of the Polish hero’s life. It tells Wladek’s story from his childhood in rural Poland, through his time flying in three Allied air forces during World War II, his capture and escape during Operation Overlord, and his reconciliation with Neubert and his commemoration as a national war hero in Poland. “Tells the story of one man’s ride through the history of most of the 20th century . . . This is far from a run-of-the-mill wartime story, being more of a touching and revealing look into an extraordinary life.” —Aircrew Remembered

Germany was at the forefront of the development of armoured cars during the First World War, however with the end of the war in November of 1918 and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 the victorious allies imposed a complete ban on the Germany army being equipped with any armoured vehicles including armoured cars. In the early 1920's. The "Zusatz von Bologne" which was an amendum to the Treaty of Versailles allowed the German Army to produce armoured cars primarily for policing duties and eventually this gave rise to the Sd.Kfz. 13 series in the early 1930's, however with the Nazi party takeover of Germany in 1933 new 4-wheeled armour cars were ordered and they were all to be based on the Horch off road heavy passenger chassis, they were numbered Sd.Kfz. 221, 222 and 223 the same chassis was also developed in to the Sd.Kfz. 260 and 261 radio command vehicles. This publication covers the German 4 wheeled cars in great photographical detail focusing on the armoured cars and their crews as they dealt with the conditions and circumstances they found themselves in, photographs from the author's own collection have been used to ilistrate this book that were taken by the average German soldier not official army cameramen who's photos are well known and have been published over and over again already.

This detailed biography brings to life one of the greatest military heroes of WWII—and demonstrates why his contributions were crucial to Allied victory. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay masterminded the evacuation of some 330,000 members of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk. He went on to play a crucial role in the invasion of Sicily and the planning and execution of the D-Day invasion, where he commanded the 7,000 ships that delivered Allied forces to the beaches of Normandy. All this from a man who had retired in 1938—only to be persuaded back to the service by Winston Churchill himself. In 1944, Ramsay was promoted to Admiral and appointed Naval Commander-in-Chief for the D-Day naval expeditionary force. A year later, he died in a mysterious air crash. Though Ramsay’s legacy has been remembered by the Royal Navy, his key role in the Allied victory has been widely forgotten. Now biographer Brian Izzard corrects this oversight, arguing that without Ramsay the outcome of both Dunkirk and D-Day—and perhaps the entire war—could have been very different.
