This is the proceedings of the symposium on Frontiers of Nuclear Structure Physics which was held from March 2-5, 1994, in honor of Akito Arima. Nuclear structure physics is approaching a new era owing to various recent developments such as radioactive nuclear beams, multiple gamma-ray detectors, massive parallel computers, etc. In the near future RHIC, CEBAF and other facilities will further extend the horizons of the field and this meeting offered a look at these exciting possibilities ahead. Topics discussed included (i) new trends in shell model, (ii) electroweak interactions in nuclei, (iii) unstable nuclei, (iv) Interacting Boson Model, (v) proton-neutron degrees of freedom in nuclear collectivity, (vi) quarks in hadrons and nuclei, (vii) nuclear astrophysics, (viii) nuclear and atomic clusters.

This book collects all of the invited papers and contributions to the Discussion Sessions, presented at the 13th European Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics, and is addressed to senior and young researchers and students interested in the field of few-body problems in elementary particle and nuclear physics, as well as in atomic and molecular physics. The volume contains a survey of recent, and not yet published results on theoretical and experimental investigations of the structure of hadrons and hadronic systems, novel theoretical methods suitable for an accurate treatment of the few-body problems in different fields, present status and future developments in muon catalysed fusion. A detailed illustration of the few-body physics programs of running (MIT-Bates, CEBAF, CERN, HERA, Mainz, NIKHEF, SATURNE, Saskatchewan, SLAC , TRIUMF) and proposed (European Electron Facility Project, Indiana cooler beam) experimental facilities represents a valuable feature of the book.

This book covers the structure and dynamics of atomic nuclei in terms of nucleons, pions, and quarks, all within a unified treatment of the nuclear response to an electromagnetic probe. The basic formalism is presented to describe the electromagnetic field and its interaction with nuclear matter for both real and virtual photons. Nuclear response is then analyzed in terms of structure functions in the case of inclusive and semi-inclusive inelastic electron scattering. The discussion covers pion production and one- or two-nucleon emission and compares the results with available data. The formalism is also extended to incident polarized electrons, polarized targets and nuclear recoil polarization. It contains a comprehensive description of photonuclear reactions at intermediate energies and a review of experimental data and previous theoretical approaches.

The NATO Advanced Study Institute "New Vistas in Electro-Nuclear Physics" was held in Banff, Alberta, Canada from August 22 to September 4, 1985. This volume con tains the lecture notes from that Institute. The idea to organize this Institute coincided with the award of funding for a pulse stretcher ring at the University of Saskatchewan's Linear Accelerator Laboratory. This together with the high level of interest in electron accelerators worldwide convinced us that it was an appropriate time to discuss the physics to be learned with such machines. In particular that physics which requires high energy and/or high duty cycle accelerators for its extraction was intended to be the focus of the Institute. Thus the scope of the lec tures was wide, with topics ranging from the structure of the trinucleons to quark models of nucleons, QCD, and QHD. The theme however was that we are just trying to under stand the nucleus and that the electromagnetic probe can serve as a powerful tool in such a quest.
