Summary of Doesn't Hurt to Ask One of the most critical skills a prosecutor can have in a courtroom is the ability to persuade. Every prosecutor knows that if they cannot persuade a jury of their client's guilt, they will never get the sentence they want. To persuade, someone must possess a few skills. The first thing they must do is know their jury. They must know any biases their jury may have, and they must know how their jury thinks. Without being able to meet the jury where they are, a prosecutor will not be very convincing. The second thing they must do is learn to listen. Listening effectively gets to know a jury, but it also helps a prosecutor ask questions. Every good prosecutor has mastered the skills of when to ask leading vs. non-leading questions. Third, a prosecutor must have strong facts and solid evidence to reach their conclusions, and they must not impede their credibility by misrepresenting facts. Fourth, when talking to witnesses, a prosecutor must seek to either undermine their credibility or build it up. By asking the right questions and presenting the correct facts, they can do this. A great prosecutor will subtly do all of these things, treating persuasion like a process rather than a momentary battle. Real persuasion is done by getting to know others and incrementally persuading them, a skill that Gowdy teaches every reader how to possess in this book. What does this SNAP Summary Include? - Synopsis of the original book - Key takeaways from each chapter - The key principles of persuasion - How to connect and persuade like a top-rated attorney - Editorial Review - Background on Trey Gowdy About the Original Book: The traditional way to persuade, Gowdy writes, is to present a logical argument and defend it with declarations of facts. This approach often works, but it is not very effective because it is essentially a monologue, and people don’t respond too well to being told what to do or believe. A better way to persuade is to determine your objective, get your facts straight, figure out your audience, and ask it the right questions at the right time. Drawing from his experiences as a prosecutor and congressman, Gowdy shows how this deceptively simple approach can be used to communicate effectively, connect deeply, and persuade convincingly. Readers who wish to become effective advocates for themselves and others will find Doesn’t Hurt to Ask an invaluable resource. When BIC, manufacturer of disposable ballpoint pens, wanted to grow, it looked for an idea beyond introducing new sizes and ink colors. Someone suggested lighters. LIGHTERS? With an idea that seemed crazy at first, that bright executive, instead of seeing BIC as a pen company—a business in the PEN “box”—figured out that there was growth to be found in the DISPOSABLE “box.” And he was right. Now there are disposable BIC lighters, razors, even phones. The company opened its door to a host of opportunities. IT INVENTED A NEW BOX. Your business can, too. And simply thinking “out of the box” is not the answer. True ingenuity needs structure, hard analysis, and bold brainstorming. It needs to start THINKING IN NEW BOXES —a revolutionary process for sustainable creativity from two strategic innovation experts from The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). To make sense of the world, we all rely on assumptions, on models—on what Luc de Brabandere and Alan Iny call “boxes.” If we are unaware of our boxes, they can blind us to risks and opportunities. This innovative book challenges everything you thought you knew about business creativity by breaking creativity down into five steps: • Doubt everything. Challenge your current perspectives. • Probe the possible. Explore options around you. • Diverge. Generate many new and exciting ideas, even if they seem absurd. • Converge. Evaluate and select the ideas that will drive breakthrough results. • Reevaluate. Relentlessly. No idea is a good idea forever. And did we mention Reevaluate? Relentlessly. Creativity is paramount if you are to thrive in a time of accelerating change. Replete with practical and potent creativity tools, and featuring fascinating case studies from BIC to Ford to Trader Joe’s, Thinking in New Boxes will help you and your company overcome missed opportunities and stay ahead of the curve. This book isn’t a simpleminded checklist. This is Thinking in New Boxes. And it will be fun. (We promise.) Praise for Thinking in New Boxes “Excellent . . . While focusing on business creativity, the principles in this book apply anywhere change is needed and will be of interest to anyone seeking to reinvent herself.”—Blogcritics “Thinking in New Boxes is a five-step guide that leverages the authors’ deep understanding of human nature to enable readers to overcome their limitations and both imagine and create their own futures. This book is a must-read for people living and working in today’s competitive environment.”—Ray O. Johnson, Ph.D., chief technology officer, Lockheed Martin “Thinking In New Boxes discusses what I believe to be one of the fundamental shifts all companies/brands need to be thinking about: how to think creatively, in order to innovate and differentiate our brands. We need to thrive and lead in a world of accelerating change and this book challenges us to even greater creativity in our thinking. One of the best business books I’ve read in a long time.”—Jennifer Fox, CEO, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts “As impressive as teaching new tricks to old dogs, Thinking in New Boxes is both inspirational and practical—a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to sharpening one’s wits in order to harness creativity in the workplace.”—Peter Gelb, general manager, Metropolitan Opera

The real-life Nickel and Dimed—the author of the wildly popular “Poverty Thoughts” essay tells what it’s like to be working poor in America. ONE OF THE FIVE MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS OF THE YEAR--Esquire “DEVASTATINGLY SMART AND FUNNY. I am the author of Nickel and Dimed, which tells the story of my own brief attempt, as a semi-undercover journalist, to survive on low-wage retail and service jobs. TIRADO IS THE REAL THING.”—Barbara Ehrenreich, from the Foreword As the haves and have-nots grow more separate and unequal in America, the working poor don’t get heard from much. Now they have a voice—and it’s forthright, funny, and just a little bit furious. Here, Linda Tirado tells what it’s like, day after day, to work, eat, shop, raise kids, and keep a roof over your head without enough money. She also answers questions often asked about those who live on or near minimum wage: Why don’t they get better jobs? Why don’t they make better choices? Why do they smoke cigarettes and have ugly lawns? Why don’t they borrow from their parents? Enlightening and entertaining, Hand to Mouth opens up a new and much-needed dialogue between the people who just don’t have it and the people who just don’t get it.

Note to Readers:This is an unofficial summary & analysis of Rod Dreher's designed to enrich your reading experience. LIVE NOT BY LIES BY ROD DREHER states that power in the USSR has belonged to the KGB and to the party of the Communists, who declared only atheism for over seventy years. According to the atheist KGB's challenging ideas, Christianity in the USSR should have died long ago. Persecution was never stopped on Christians: behind the "iron curtain," grandfathers, fathers, and young men were persecuted and dominated harshly. Their children endured oppression and were taken away from their homes. Many children have never returned home; they were sent to a special place to be raised as an activist-communist. This was the reality of the situation in the USSR while under the control of the KGB's emperor.According to the American dictionary, "The concept of the Iron Curtain symbolized the ideological fighting and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991."Even though Christians were persecuted and prosecuted in courts severely and sent to prisons for many years, they were deeply grateful to God for His love for them, and for that, God put faith and courage into their hearts to stand firm for their faith. Christians of the USSR were grateful to Almighty God for the mutual support shown by Christians of Europe and America and for their prayers for the USSR over many years.
