This fundamental resource for presiders and lectors, homilists and liturgy planners is perfect for lector training programs, liturgy committee meetings and scripture study groups to promote good proclamation and love of scripture in the Sunday assembly. Readings are presented in sense-line format--exactly as they appear in the lectionary--to aid the reader in preparation, and lectionary numbers are included for each set of readings. Aelred R. Rosser offers helpful commentaries for each reading, providing background information and tips for effective proclamation. Margin notes point out logical divisions in the passages and help the reader with difficult pronunciations. Words are marked in the reading to aid the reader in stressing important sections and concepts. Workbook is arranged according to the liturgical year, from the First Sunday of Advent, December 1, 2002, to the solemnity of Christ the King, November 23, 2003. The readings for Year B of the Sunday lectionary are provided in the revised New American Bible translation, approved for use in the dioceses of the United States.

When Adrien Nocent's The Liturgical Year was published in the 1970s, it was the very first comprehensive commentary on the three-year lectionary in relation to the Sacramentary/Missal as these were revised following the Second Vatican Council. Expressed on nearly every page was Nocent's conviction that the liturgy and the Word of God proclaimed within it have something important to say to real people of every culture and time. He constantly returns to the question: What does this passage have to say to us today? Now this extraordinary work of applied, postconciliar liturgical scholarship has been emended and annotated by one of today's leading liturgical scholars. Paul Turner has provided many helpful explanatory notes on history, culture, language, and, of course, liturgy. He has also updated the liturgical texts to conform to The Roman Missal, Third Edition. The result is a resource that promises to enrich and inspire a new generation of presiders, preachers, liturgy planners, and students. On the fiftieth anniversary of Vatican II's Sacrosanctum Concilium, encounter the vibrant scholarship and pastoral wisdom of Adrien Nocent's The Liturgical Year again or for the first time! Volume 3 covers all of the Sundays of Ordinary Time.

Adrien Nocent's The Liturgical Year was the first comprehensive commentary on the three-year lectionary in its relation to the Sacramentary of Paul VI. Now this extraordinary work of applied, postconciliar liturgical scholarship has been revised and annotated by Paul Turner. While taking care to keep Nocent's voice, the revision provides: a brief introduction, placing the commentary in its historical context; annotations that provide a bridge between Nocent's day and our own; explanatory notes on history, culture, language, and liturgy where needed; gender-inclusive language where appropriate; liturgical texts that conform to The Roman Missal, Third Edition. As we celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Vatican II's Sacrosanctum Concilium, encounter again or for the first time the still fresh, vibrant scholarship and pastoral wisdom of Adrien Nocent's The Liturgical Year! “To relish the feast that is Scripture, we need to use multiple models.” A Christian never gains all that Scripture offers by reading it with just one approach. Yet too often this is attempted—whether through an academic obsession with the historical-critical method or through a consumerist approach that seeks only the motivation of the moment. Mark Reasoner broadens the options for scriptural engagement by describing five models of Scripture: documents, stories, prayers, laws, and oracles. To illustrate each, he uses examples from throughout the history of interpretation. While he concedes that certain books of the Bible will naturally lend themselves to particular models, Reasoner shows how an appreciation for all five will enrich one’s scriptural insights while also bridging divides between the various branches of the Christian family. In addition to the five models, Reasoner surveys Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant constructions of the biblical canon and addresses specific issues relevant to their respective interpretations of Scripture, including scriptural metanarratives, the use of the Bible in Christian worship, and the principle of sola Scriptura. Through it all, Reasoner remains unequivocally focused on his goal: “to help readers grow in their love for Scripture in ways that will help them plant this love in those to whom they minister.”
