He was neighbor, acquaintance, and fellow churchgoer with Ulysses S. Grant after the American Civil War. His lively account of his war experiences are exciting, absorbing, tragic, and humorous. What sets Wilbur Crummer's Civil War memoir apart from that of hundreds of others by Union line soldiers was his proximity to General Grant. Both of them were Illinois residents at the outbreak of war and Crummer's enlistment in the 45th Illinois Volunteer Infantry put him under Grant's command for some of the most important battles of the war. Crummer was there at Fort Donelson, the battle that brought Grant to national fame and to the eventual remark by Abraham Lincoln, "I can't spare this man. He fights." Crummer was at bloody Shiloh, a Union victory that nevertheless nearly derailed Grant's military career due to its horrific loss of life. And Crummer was at what is considered by many to be the most brilliant campaign of the war: Vicksburg. Today, Grant's capture of Vicksburg is overshadowed by Meade's victory at Gettysburg just one day prior. But Grant's accomplishment was essential to winning the war for the Union. Two days before Vicksburg surrendered, Wilbur Crummer was severely wounded by a sharpshooter's bullet through the lung. He spent the rest of the war recovering. After the war, Crummer spent much time up close to the great general in Galena, Illinois. He was for a time in the employ of William Ruben Rowley, (1824-1886), a good friend and neighbor of Grant who had served on his wartime staff. He pays glowing tribute to both in the final chapter of this book.

Excerpt from With Grant at Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Vicksburg, and an Appreciation of General U. S Grant In this year of 1915, when the sounds of battle and strife come wafted to us across the sea from Europe, the younger generation are asking questions of the Veterans of the Civil War about their experiences in battle. Formerly I lived in Galena, Ill., and having been personally acquainted with, and a neighbor of General U. S. Grant, and one of the "Boys in Blue" who followed him in the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Vicksburg, I deem it my privilege to add my mite to the history that clusters round the greatest military genius of modern times. To please many friends who have heard my lectures on the Civil War, and at the request of my children, the following pages have been written, from data made at the time and since, and from a vivid memory of the stirring days of 1862 and 1863. With kaleidoscopic, trenchant, path-breaking insights, Elizabeth D. Samet has produced the most ambitious edition of Ulysses Grant’s Memoirs yet published. One hundred and thirty-three years after its 1885 publication by Mark Twain, Elizabeth Samet has annotated this lavish edition of Grant’s landmark memoir, and expands the Civil War backdrop against which this monumental American life is typically read. No previous edition combines such a sweep of historical and cultural contexts with the literary authority that Samet, an English professor obsessed with Grant for decades, brings to the table. Whether exploring novels Grant read at West Point or presenting majestic images culled from archives, Samet curates a richly annotated, highly collectible edition that will fascinate Civil War buffs. The edition also breaks new ground in its attack on the “Lost Cause” revisionism that still distorts our national conversation about the legacy of the Civil War. Never has Grant’s transformation from tanner’s son to military leader been more insightfully and passionately explained than in this timely edition, appearing on the 150th anniversary of Grant’s 1868 presidential election.

Includes over 30 maps and Illustrations The Staff Ride Handbook for the Vicksburg Campaign, December 1862-July 1863, provides a systematic approach to the analysis of this key Civil War campaign. Part I describes the organization of the Union and Confederate Armies, detailing their weapons, tactics, and logistical, engineer, communications, and medical support. It also includes a description of the U.S. Navy elements that featured so prominently in the campaign. Part II consists of a campaign overview that establishes the context for the individual actions to be studied in the field. Part III consists of a suggested itinerary of sites to visit in order to obtain a concrete view of the campaign in its several phases. For each site, or “stand,” there is a set of travel directions, a discussion of the action that occurred there, and vignettes by participants in the campaign that further explain the action and which also allow the student to sense the human “face of battle.” Part IV provides practical information on conducting a Staff Ride in the Vicksburg area, including sources of assistance and logistical considerations. Appendix A outlines the order of battle for the significant actions in the campaign. Appendix B provides biographical sketches of key participants. Appendix C provides an overview of Medal of Honor conferral in the campaign. An annotated bibliography suggests sources for preliminary study.
