Excerpt from William Wordsworth He respected himself, he revered his subject too much for that. The close personal intimacy, the frequent intercourse he had enjoyed with the venerable old man who had shown him an all but fatherly affection, so far from dulling his sense of what was due to such a character, only served to intensify it, and nothing would have given him greater pain than to dwell on the passing weak nesses, and the commonplace and unedifying de tails from which no human life is wholly exempt. Excerpt from The Life of William Wordsworth, Vol. 1 No reader of this Life of Wordsworth can regret, so much as the author does, the long delay that has occurred in its publication. Although the first of the three volumes has been printed for more than a year, the issue of the work has been postponed from causes too numerous to mention. When the edition of the Works of Wordsworth - to which this Life was to be an appendix - was projected, eight years ago, the first idea was that a single volume would suffice, both for a Biography of the poet, and for a critical Essay upon him. As soon as the work of research began, however, so much new material accumulated from many sources, that it was judged expedient, not only to extend the Biography from one volume to two, and ultimately to three, but to exclude the critical Essay, reserving it for a future occasion, and a different purpose. It can be of little consequence to any who read these volumes, to know what the writer thinks of Wordsworth, of his place as a poet in the great hierarchy of genius, and of his function as a teacher of mankind; but it matters a great deal that they should have authentic information as to the manner of man Wordsworth was - as to what he thought and said and did - and that they should know the relations he sustained toward the more distinguished of his contemporaries. Excerpt from Selections From the Poems of William Wordsworth George Beaumont's picture of Peele Castle, and The Happy Warrior, which are to be found in almost every anthology, have been omitted to make room for pieces less familiar, but not less striking. The various sources which have been consulted for the purpose of this volume will be found mentioned in the notes: for the chronological sequence of the poems the editor has depended largely upon the one volume editions by Lord Morley of Blackburn and Mr Thomas Hutchinson. As in other volumes of selections, he has been aided greatly by the advice of his wife, who has read and given help with the notes. Excerpt from William Wordsworth, Vol. 1: His Life, Works, and Influence I now come to the pleasantest part of my long task, the expression of indebtedness and gratitude to those who have helped me. And first I recall with reverence the sunny mornings of a happy childhood when my mother trained me to memorize Wordsworth's poems, and instilled into my heart a love for his name. It was, I believe, at the suggestion of my wife, and largely because of her love for Wordsworth, that I undertook to write this book. In hours of discouragement she has held me to my task, and at all times her help has proved invaluable. To M. Legouis I am grateful, not only for his book - which is beyond praise, and has estab lished a new standard in English biography (for it has been perfectly translated) - but for many valuable sug gestions made to me in private. Mr. Gordon Words worth, the poet's grandson, has generously placed at my disposal much unprinted material, has allowed me to examine the manuscripts of Dorothy Wordsworth's journals, and has assisted me in matters of interpreta tion as well as in matters of fact. He and Mr. Frank E. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from William Wordsworth: A Biography You will think as you read this book that sometimes I have floated away from the more immediate subject on a gossamer, which had not a very close relation to it. In reading the proof, I have sometimes felt this myself; for instance, it may seem the ease in the analysis of the elements of tragic genius suggested by poems so short but so full and so vital as those of Lao damia and Dion. And now, dearest of friends, and severest of critics, affectionately, Farewell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
