Excerpt from The 40 Year March of Radio The story I try to tell you is the romance of a fast moving era's precocious and Versatile child, famil iarly called 'radio' in America and called 'wireless' in England. Implicit in radio's every adventure is the wider story of constantly increasing momentum in the scientific and industrial accomplishments that change and enrich our daily lives. We take speed so much for granted today that we cannot realize how much the momentum of achievement in nearly every field has increased, until we look into the past. Excerpt from The Rape of Radio My Name is Radio! BY Robert West My name is Radio! My influence shall abide! I, Magic Box, am something years ago The wizards dreamed of in the Arabian Nights. Science has conceived and brought to birth, More wondrous far than legends' figments wrought By the ingenious bards of long ago. Use cannot make me stale nor custom pale The glamor of my march of offerings. The world now needs me every- day and night To fill its every want and appetite For news, for music and sweet conversation, For comedy that wreathes society in smiles. I feel like a spirit medium that can bring The listener what'er he wishes from the void. Do you want multitude of thoughts, all types? Full measure comes with the revolving dial; The masters wait to pour out symphonies That rock the world and set your soul on fire. Do you want messages of happenings About this troublous world? You surely may. Do you seek sympathy, companionship? Then I am ready to respond and give You all the fullness of my complex chords To shake you out of selfish isolation As you glide on from station unto station. For I am Radio! Forward tomorrow, I shall strike out for rich new worlds to conquer Making the present television faint A shadow of the glories that will come In fullness of the real in shape and hue. Life shall be more bounteous for my task! 'Tis mine to enlarge your reach and view and ear To the utmost bounds, making man great As could be wished when a young Alexander Did set to conquer the whole habited world; Only my means persuasively are unfurled. Excerpt from Writing for Television and Radio The Mass Media of television and radio are closely related in the development and practice of writing techniques. Indeed, it is usual for television and radio writing to be combined in one course in most colleges and universities. For a number of years good texts and resource books have been available on television writing alone and on radio writing alone. In addition, there are several fine works oriented primarily toward dramatic writing. From the practical point of view, however, relatively few opportunities exist today for the serious television or radio playwright. The jobs available for television and radio writers are most frequently found among the program types which exist on local as well as network levels, including news, sports, talks programs of various kinds, panel-games-audience participation shows, women's and children's programs, music and variety shows, special features and, sometimes, documentaries. Extremely important is the writing of announcements and commercials. Those who wish to write for the mass media, the playwright included, can benefit from a knowledge of the non-dramatic areas. Over a number of years of teaching television and radio writing, I was unable to find a text devoted predominantly to the above "bread-and-butter" aspects of the two media. Consequently, I developed my own teaching materials which, after several years of testing and revision, now make up this book. My purpose is not to slight the play, which I believe to be highest form of writing (about one-fifth of this book is devoted to dramatic writing). My primary aim, however, is to make available to all who are concerned with broadcast writing that which was heretofore unavailable: a book devoted principally to the non-dramatic forms of both television and radio. By concentrating on the practical elements needed to prepare one for a writing job, and on the areas of writing that comprise most of current broadcast fare, I hope that this book may serve as a single, comprehensive work for all who wish to learn some of the basic principles and techniques of the craft, and as a useful reference source for professional writers.
