International students play a pivotal role in the Australian higher education landscape and the economy. In 2019 alone, international students' education services generated more than $40 billion in export income (money paid from overseas sources). Asian international students represent the largest segment, accounting for 83 per cent of the cohort in Australia. Despite their significant contribution – and well before the devastating impact of COVID-19 on the industry – international students were becoming disillusioned with Australia as a study destination. Asian International Students of Australia (AISA) suggests implementing strategies to attract and retain international students. These include: 1. End workplace exploitation 2. Grant travel concession in all jurisdictions 3. Provide safe and affordable accommodation.
This book examines the governance of Asian student and academic mobility, which has transformed the higher education landscape. While campuses are experiencing an unprecedented level of diversity, knowledge creation remains explicitly Eurocentric and dominated by the Global North. The authors advocate for a new educational paradigm that takes into account the transcultural flow of knowledge on campus as a public good, capitalises on Asian students and academics’ multilingual competencies, and offers them equal access to creating quality-orientated education. The book argues that international higher education must be grounded in both a plurality of knowledges and the ethics of cognitive justice, and that the governing policies should facilitate the higher education sector to build a platform of internationalising affect and effect on campus.
This volume investigates the policy and practice of medium of instruction at different levels of education in Asian polities including Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Maldives, Nepal, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. This book documents the growing mobility of international students in the Asia Pacific. International students comprise over 2.7m students and it is estimated by the OECD that this will top 8 million in 2020. The great majority of them are students from the Asian countries who study in the Europe, North America and Asia. In addition countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong are becoming “education hubs” and are proposing to attract international students. Over 42% of international students come from Asia and this is predicted to continue with the strong presence of students from China, India, Korea and Japan continuing. A younger population, a growing middle class and shortages of quality education providers in the Asia Pacific region means that this mobility will be a feature of the future. This book explores questions around the mobility of international students in the context of the global economy and an increasingly competitive trans-national education market. It also explores questions about the experience of international students principally from the Asia Pacific region at a time of increased global insecurity and growing hostile reactions to foreigners in the post September 11th era. This book emerges from empirical work from several research projects funded by the World Bank and several community projects to support international students. The focus is also on the way in which student mobility promotes growing connection within the Asia Pacific, as well as other regions, and provides the foundations for new notions of global citizenships.

This book identifies three types of influential forces that pose challenges to innovations: socio-cultural dynamics, teacher individuality, and local circumstances.
