TRB Special Report 259 - Environmental Performance of Tanker Designs in Collision and Grounding: Method for Comparison describes a modeling process for evaluating alternative designs. The process encompasses consideration of the structural deformations from collisions and grounding and the environmental consequences of spills of different sizes, and uses a riskbased approach for comparing designs. Since passage of the Oil Pollution Act (OPA) of 1990 and subsequent decisions of the International Maritime Organization, the world tanker fleet has been evolving to double-hulled designs to reduce the risk of accidental spills. A previous study by the Marine Board, now part of TRB, concluded that the double-hull design had been effective in reducing oil spills (Double-Hull Tanker Legislation: An Assessment of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, NRC 1998). OPA 1990 was passed because of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound. Although the world’s tanker owners have been shifting to double-hull designs, a variety of other hull designs have been proposed that might be as effective and less costly. The U.S. Coast Guard has not been willing to consider such alternatives, in part because of the wording of OPA 1990 and in part because of the difficulty of comparing complex designs.

This thesis considers the non-equilibrium and energy transfer processes involved in the evolution of astrophysical gases and plasmas. Momentum-energy transfer in collisions of atoms, molecules and ions governs the evolution of interacting astrophysical gas and plasmas. These collisions require an accurate quantum mechanical description and the work presented here develops a unified kinetic and quantum-mechanical model for this consideration. The multi-scale computational approach implemented here takes into account non-thermal distributions of atomic particles and clarifies their role in the evolution of interstellar gas and planetary atmospheres. As shown, the physical parameters of non-thermal distributions strongly depend on the differential cross sections of atomic, molecular and ion collisions. Readers will find a detailed description of the energy relaxation of energetic atoms, produced in the interstellar gas by the solar and stellar wind plasmas. Computation of the non-thermal diffuse background of energetic helium atoms in the heliosphere is also included for evaluation of the contributions from local and cosmic sources and analysis of related satellite observations. Work involving modeling of energetic particle precipitation into planetary atmospheres and formation of the planetary and exoplanetary escape fluxes has been performed with very accurate cross sections, describing momentum-energy transfer processes with high precision. Results of the Monte Carlo simulations, carried out for the Mars atmosphere at different solar conditions, can be used for analysis of observational data for Mars atmospheric escape and investigation into the history of Martian water.
Open world games have tremendously become a demanding criterion for computer games development as user be able to freely roam through land and sea virtually. One of the elements involving computer games development is to bring applicable real-time collision detection for each object. Collision detection required sophisticated process of using hierarchical approach of Bounding-Volume Hierarchies (BVH) for detecting procedure. BVH is one of the most challenging issues in collision detection area that critically undergoing multiple splitting process. Splitting process requires an object with their set of triangles to be split into two parts using binary type tree. It is very crucial to make sure that the BVH tree construction is always in balanced as the speed of BVH tree traversal algorithm is dropped for unbalanced tree. In this thesis, we introduced Spatial Object Median Splitting (SOMS) to enhance the capability of BVH construction. Hence, SOMS creates an optimum level of BVH where most leaf nodes that was bounded with AABB contained one triangle compared to Spatial Median technique. From the BVH construction experiments, SOMS managed to perform faster as compared to other common technique. Furthermore, experiment to create one BV one triangle also showed that SOMS produced more nodes. As a conclusion, BVH can easily be constructed using SOMS approach together to create higher level of balanced tree for collision detection.
