Excerpt from West London Medical Journal, 1906, Vol. 11 One of the chief objections people have to visiting jamaica appears to be the dread of yellow fever, but this is a mistake, for yellow fever has practically been stamped out. Some malarial fevers there are, but these are not of a severe or persistent type, and on the best authority I may say there are no endemic diseases to which visitors are liable, if ordinary precautions are taken, and the total death-rate of the whole population of the Island averaged only per for the last ten years, one of the chief causes of death being pulmonary consumption, which is very prevalent among the black population on account of their insanitary dwellings. Excerpt from Western Medical Review: Vol I, May to December, 1896; Vol II, January to December, 1897 In this brief paper I desire to call attention to recent progress in the examinations of blood in disease, in its bearing particularly on diagnosis, prognosis. And treatment. On a visit to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, less than a year ago, I was impressed with the importance given this subject, and interested to note the scientific precision, not only in the diagnosis of diseases in which blood examinations have an important place, but also in determining the probability of complications, the influence on prognosis, and the indications in treatment.
