Faith in Jesus Christ shapes the whole of the Christian life, not merely the parts that are safe and convenient, requiring little if anything of us. The realm of faith involves not only the interior life of the spirit, but everything that disciples of Jesus Christ think and do and are, including the way we participate in the politics of our communities, nation, and world. Do you ever wonder about the relationship between your theology and what’s happening in the politics of our nation and world, or ponder how your views might change if the biblical narrative were formative for your political opinions and beliefs? If so, this book is for you.

God's Focus on the Fatherless is an excellent thematic study guide offering a fresh perspective to leaders of local churches who desire to be in tune with God's heart for the marginalized within our communities. God's repeated exhortations (i.e., fatherhood, brokenness, compassion, authority, relationship, presence, justice . . .) are brought to the fore in a focused study that will expand the Christian understanding of God's compassionate heart for the least among us. The principles are timeless and presented in a format accessible to leaders and students of the Bible alike. The fresh perspective is sure to cause a greater ownership of ministry in both the local church and the local community. The "fatherless" principles presented will facilitate positive personal and corporate changes in a church's unique ministry setting. Pastor Chaplain Dwight Croy brings his rich Christian upbringing and experience in the pastorate, chaplaincy, and teaching juvenile boys in a residential setting to guide instruction concerning God's address of the fatherless. This study fits nicely into a twelve-week period and is formatted and prepared for teaching in a small group setting. The study will inspire fervent discussion and then move quickly to practical application.

How does God manage his entire creation? Has he had a plan, a theme, a metanarrative or something else which he follows that gives a unity to all of his efforts? Shepherds describes the relationship between the Creator and his creation, a relationship that is structurally integrated by the very core of who God is. There is a design within creation that radiates from his personal, unique being. What God created and how he manages it is a marvelous extension of who he is and how he acts. This relationship between God and his creation is not patterned only on his essence or being, but on his powerful and loving will and acts. Rather than a literary grid to which "theme" and "metanarrative" attempt to subject God's relationship with humanity, Shepherds recognizes that all of creation bears the eternal design emanating from God's very nature. Scripture is not a "story" about Israel or the church; it is not simply a story of redemption; it is a window into the eternal design by which God created reality and will eternally sustain that creation.

What if our inherited theologies of salvation are distorted by a sinful history that includes white supremacy, slavery, and colonial conquest? What if we perpetuate this distortion by continuing to imagine salvation as a legal transaction by which we are saved by God from divine punishment? If salvation merely rectifies the individual’s standing before God, justice and human flourishing are viewed as peripheral to “the gospel.” This book begins with a bit of “deconstruction.” But the real need is construction or perhaps the discovery of another “soteriological imagination.” To be saved is to be drawn into union with Jesus Messiah, the bringer of the now and future reign of God where all things are rectified. Jesus’s life, death, and resurrected body are the space where a disordered creation is put right. Jesus is God’s “apocalyptic insurrection” against every power that dehumanizes, harms, and destroys human persons. We are saved by the triune God, by God’s gracious acceptance that cannot be earned. But we are saved for participation in the invasion of God’s reign of justice, healing, and transformation. Salvation has everything to do with caring for refugees, resisting systemic racial and other injustices, food for the hungry, and valuing human persons as Christ incognito.

This is an extraordinary text. It addresses no small number of traditional theological concerns. However, it addresses them mindful of the earthiness of life. Thus this is also a book that is concerned to address questions of migration, brain physiology, emotional trauma, time, love, and death. It is written not to satisfy a bloodless lust for the resolution of puzzles. It is written with confidence that tangible bodies think. Thus there is an earthy quality to its writing, both in what it addresses and how it is addressed. The manner of After Crucifixion may be imagined as a moment in which in some unpretentious underground venue the deep, resonant percussions of subwoofers roll as a carnal wave across the chest and throat before they become the bass line in a conscious musical thought. After Crucifixion has been written for the ears, the chest, the throat, no less than for focused, deliberate, disciplined thought. But it is written in particular for bodies befriended by the Mystery of life and death--in the carnal event of the crucifixion/resurrection of the Galilean peasant Jesus, who unhands the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil and thus invites us to join him in prayer.
