Since I have devoted so much time writing such serious works as, "John the Baptist: As His Soul Remembers" and "The History of the Universe: As My Soul and I Remember," I felt the need to write something much lighter in nature. This book resulted directly from my walks through Riverside Cemetery which surrounds the "Old Yard", the burial place of the founders of Baldwinsville, New York, the town in which I reside. All of the 'soul' or if you prefer, 'ghost' stories take place in the early to mid 1800s, around the time when the graveyard opened. It was a time when folks were coming from all parts of the world to find their American dream. This book contains many of them. The first twelve chapters are their stories. Chapter 131⁄2 is mine. I'm not superstitious... 93⁄4 was already taken. This cemetery is important to me in another way. It is our plan that my wife, Carol, and myself will be buried here and I plan to talk to anyone who walks by me. Enjoy!

People come to Denver for the nearby mountains and spectacular natural beauty, the craft beer, the outdoor lifestyle and mild climate with abundant sunshine, but what they also discover is how walkable it is as they explore culinary treasures, history that goes from the time of the dinosaurs to the founding of the Centennial state, and unique culture of the west. In Walking Denver, author and local Mindy Sink guides readers—whether they are first-time visitors or natives—on 32 diverse walks through the heart of the city, up into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and across the eastern plains. Find the spots where the city reaches 5,280 feet above sea level or one mile high, giving the city it’s nickname of the Mile High City; tiptoe through historic cemeteries and learn of those who shaped Denver in its early days; explore the arts in the Golden Triangle and Arts District on Santa Fe neighborhoods; plan for a half-day outing to the famed Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre and nearby Lookout Mountain Nature Center & Preserve; visit the state’s first capitol with a stroll through downtown Golden and much more. In this new edition, the author invited her then-11 year old daughter, Sophie Seymour, to contribute “Kid Tips” to select walks that are most suitable for families. Sophie highlights the elements of these walks that will most appeal to kids—playgrounds, wildlife, and activities along the way. Not only is the whole family getting some exercise, they are learning together about history, art, architectural trivia, and what makes this place so engaging. Whether you’re looking for a two-hour stroll or a full-day’s entertainment, grab this book, step outside...walk Denver!

As pioneers attempted to settle and civilize the ?Wild West,? cemeteries became important cultural centers. Filled with carved wooden headboards, inscribed local stones, and Italian marble statues, cemeteries functioned as symbols of stability and progress toward a European-inspired vision of Manifest Destiny. As repositories of art and history, these pioneer cemeteries tell the story of communities and visual culture emerging together within the developing landscape of the Old West. Annette Stott traces this story through Rocky Mountain towns on the western frontier, from the unkempt ?boot hills? of the early mining camps and cattle settlements to the more refined ?fair mounts.? She shows how people from Asia, Europe, and the Americas contributed to the visual character of the mountain cemeteries, and how the sepulchral garden functioned as an open-air gallery of public sculpture, at once a site for relaxation, learning, and social ritual. Here, widespread participation in a variety of ceremonies brought mountain communities together with a frequency almost unimaginable today. Illustrated with eighty-three striking photographs, this book shows how the pioneer cemetery emerged as a site of public sculpture and cultural transmission in which each carved or molded monument played dual (and sometimes conflicting) public and private roles, recording the community?s history and values while memorializing individuals and events.
