The author provides valuable advice on touch and technique, including articulation and fingering, with a lucid exposition of the issues involved in historical performance practice and a clear explanation of ornamentation. The repertoire of each of the great national schools is presented and discussed, with four representative pieces singled out for detailed analysis. More advanced players will welcome the author's suggestions on continuo playing and the helpful discussion of tuning and temperaments. From advice on acquiring a harpsichord, to wise counsel on how to play it and what music to choose, to suggestions on maintenance and tuning, A Guide to the Harpsichord is an indispensable companion for both beginning and advanced harpsichordists.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe eight verse anthems in this edition constitute the only full scores of works in Blow's hand that survive in this abundant genre. The scores are located in two manuscripts that are now parts of the collections at Christ Church, Oxford, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The Oxford manuscript includes five anthems from the 1670s, and each displays a variety of structural and musical-rhetoric procedures, making them ideal representatives of Blow's multifaceted early style. The Cambridge manuscript dates from ca. 1704 and contains three late works on a much larger scale. As a group, the later anthems require considerably greater virtuosity from the solo singers, and individual verse sections grow both longer and more numerous. As representative examples within a much larger repertoire, the works selected for this edition help to reveal important facets in the career of the first person to hold the title, Composer of the Chapel Royal.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis reference work catalogs music for organ and harpsichord written by more than 700 women composers from 40 countries. Compiler Adel Heinrich has expanded the organ and harpsichord repertoire to include choir and instruments accompanying organ and harpsichord. She provides more detailed information about each work than can be found in any other reference book on women composers. In addition to biographies for each woman, Heinrich supplies listings of individual compositions, and includes descriptions and sources whenever possible. Each composition is listed in both the Instrumentation Index and the Title Index. Publishers, library sources, and recording companies with their addresses are also provided. There is also a chronological listing of composers by country. Two appendices list a large number of women who have either written music for organ and harpsichord with no specific titles known, or have performed on one or both instruments. This reference book is a valuable resource for organists, harpsichordists, teachers, choral and instrumental conductors, and planners of festivals and recitals.
