Technological advances and the way young people interact with them means children are thinking and processing information in an increasingly visual manner. Visualising Literacy and How to Teach It recognises that many, if not most, children are attracted to visual images and uses this as a basis for introducing and developing a range of thinking skills and strategies for learning. This practical resource offers a selection of visuals, each accompanied by activities that give children practice in using their imaginations in different ways. Visualising Literacy and How to Teach It not only explores creative and critical thinking skills but also pays close attention to the overarching thinking skill that we call imagination. The book contains around 150 practical activities that develop children’s imaginations, focussing on a range of thinking skills, including but not limited to the following: developing observational/attentional skills noticing details (focussing of attention) assimilating visual information increasing experience of inferential thinking, speculation, dealing with generalisations boosting vocabulary empowering one’s attitude towards exploring ideas learning different questioning techniques increasing the ability to empathise becoming comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity Many of the visualisation techniques can be applied to developing different aspects of emotional resourcefulness, including empathy, positive self-image, anchoring positive thoughts and modifying negative thoughts and feelings. This is, therefore, an essential resource for any teacher or education professional who is keen on developing children’s ability to think and express their own ideas.

Does your learner need help with reading comprehension? Visualization skills are vital for fast and efficient comprehension. Visualization Skills for Reading Comprehension builds this key skill quickly and efficiently. Visualizing is the ability to create mental pictures in our heads based on the text we read or the words we hear. It is one of the key skills required for reading comprehension. Students who visualize as they read not only have a richer reading experience but can recall what they have read for longer periods of time. Moreover, having a strong mental image of a text allows students to more accurately and effectively answer Higher Order Thinking (HOT) questions, such as inferencing, prediction, etc. If your learner struggles with reading comprehension, working on visualization skills should be high on your list of priorities. Visualization Skills for Reading Comprehension provides step-by-step activities to quickly build the ability to visualize information while reading. To become literate and articulate in the domain of images, to be competent in understanding the nature and structure of visual messages, is to be keenly aware of one's vision. It also means mastering a common set of terms attached to what one sees and creates. Attaining this comprehensive understanding of visual form is the task of a design student. Drawing on analog pedagogical precedents, this thesis sets out to examine the ways in which dynamic media can be used as a unique aid to vision, a means to impart greater insight into the designer's vocabulary. Through two interactive tools, RandStudio and LetterForm, my thesis investigates how using motion and the principles of interactivity to visualize information can complement traditional approaches to teaching visual literacy. RandStudio is a system designed to help students analyze the work of master designer Paul Rand. By letting users manipulate practically all of the visual elements in a classic Rand poster, the project guides them to discover the formal mechanics behind Rand's refined simplicity. LetterForm is an interactive tool that illustrates typographic terminology and allows students to explore the elemental formal properties of the letterform. Both case studies help students to become more aware of the communicative potential of formal decisions--of the dynamic correlation between form and communication--by providing the opportunity to drive dynamic transformation of form on screen.

Visual literacy is an increasingly critical skill in a globalizing, digital world. This book addresses the core issues concerning visual literacy in education, underscoring its importance for the instruction of students and educators. Professor Billie Eilam argues that the incorporation of visual skill development in teacher training programs will help break the cycle of visual illiteracy. Understanding the pedagogical benefits and risks of visual representation can help educators develop effective strategies to produce visually literate students. Eilam presents a broad overview of theoretical knowledge regarding visual representation, as well as a discussion of best practices for the use of visual elements in schools. In addition to theory, Eilam includes practical exercises for introducing visual literacy into teacher education, offering strategies for analyzing visualization in curricula and for increasing awareness of visual culture.
