"This book, the broadest and most enterprising survey of its kind, showcases the creativity, ingenuity, and inspiration of up-and-coming photographic artists in over 200 images. Curators at the Musee de l'Elysee in Lausanne selected the photographers from hundreds of candidates submitted by more than sixty of the world's top photography schools. The panel's choice was made with one key question in mind: are these images likely to be known in twenty years' time?"--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This is a conceptual work with a tragic underlying narrative: the disappearance of the teenager. The project tends to question our relationship towards absence and loss and the need of physicality in the process of acceptance and closure. The book combines materials from different sources, such as family archives, reproductions of police and psychic files as well as photographs by Virginie Rebetez. This two year project is also a a reflection on the medium of photography. The status of each image is constantly shifting, offering new meaning and context to this open case. Delphine Bedel, the editor and publisher, and Virginie Rebetez worked together 6 months on this publication, with great attention details and to the narrative structure of the book. The roles of images and their haptic qualities keep shifting, family archives and memories becomes first police evidence and later tactile objets for the mediums and the artist, a fragmented representation of reality, a transformation process that Delphine calls 'the haptic image'.

Since 1980, progress in research on the fission-track dating method and its applications to earth and related sciences has been evaluated during an International Workshop that takes place every four years. This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the International Workshop held in Gent (Belgium) from 26 to 30 August, 1996. Primarily the articles will be of interest to the active fission-track scientists but the combination of research papers and critical reviews that is presented may also provide the interested non-specialist reader with a valuable insight into the fission-track dating method and its role in the earth sciences. This reader will undoubtedly note the evolution that the method has undergone during the last fifteen years, from a technique that was debated in most of its facets to an established chronometric tool with unique qualities in geothermochronology.

Fashion design is not a category usually associated with war, but in fact it is a consideration that all war-mongers must take into account when they are planning battles, be they naval or air, military or rebel, national or international. Every country in the world has its own camouflage--can you tell from the various patterns which country is trying to hide from you? "Useful Photography No. 4: The War Special" exhibits what different countries wear when they go to war and the products that keep them hidden on the front lines.

In ?Margins of Excess? the notion of how personal imagination conflicts with generally accepted beliefs is expressed through the narratives of six individuals. Every one of them momentarily received nationwide attention in the US press because of their attempts to realize a dream or passion, but were presented as frauds or deceivers by the mass media?s apparent incapacity to deal with idiosyncratic versions of reality.0The current era of ?post-truth?, in which truths, half-truths, lies, fiction or entertainment are easily interchanged, has produced a culture of ?hyper-individual truths?, demanding a new approach to identify the underlying narratives that structure our perception of reality in a world where there is no longer a generally accepted frame of realism. 0Embedding the stories of the six main protagonists into a clustering tale of cloned military dogs, religious apparitions, suspect vehicles, fake terrorist plots, accidental bombings and fictional presidents, this book follows an associative logic akin to the indiscriminate way a paranoid mind connects unrelated events, or the hysteria of the 24-second news cycle.

James Pfaff?s work deals with the documentation and reconstruction of his own life and universe. Drawing on his photographic archive and personal journals, his expression is primarily through the medium of photography. He often later combines his images with the abstract form, paint, collage, and the written word in contemporary response. The series?Alex & Me? (1998)? in which the narrative of an American road trip undertaken by Pfaff together with a woman poetically plays out? can be considered as a point of departure. He writes:?The summer of?98 was slipping away as we made our way south. Asphalt and neon. Black coffee, cigarettes. Night-scented Louisiana.?
