The articles in this collection deal with early Virginia deeds, surveys, warrants, conveyances, patents, and grants, and virtually every article pertaining to the transfer and ownership of real property ever published in the leading Virginia periodicals is included. Most of the articles identify tenants, owners, and occupiers of specific parcels of land and thus place individuals and whole families in a particular place at a definite time.
This work is essentially a compilation of articles that deal wholly or in part with muster and pay rolls, court order books, pension records, land claims, depositions, petitions, militia lists, orderly books, and service records. The majority of the articles focus on the records of the colonial and Revolutionary War periods, but there also are some that relate to the War of 1812. In the aggregate these comprise data of almost unequaled variety and magnitude. Produced over the years by an army of specialists, they were spread throughout the three periodicals named in the title. This varied and immense body of data is brought together in a handy and well-indexed volume, which will make its use by the researcher very easy.

This is primarily a compilation of articles pertaining to tax records--a term used rather freely to permit inclusion of such records as personal property tax lists, tithables, poll lists, land tax lists, and rent rolls. Like census records, tax records have the distinction of placing people in a particular location at a definite time and identifying them in relation to their households and property, thus providing irrefutable evidence of their existence and places of habitation. These records probably represent only a fraction of the early tax records of Virginia, but they do constitute a large proportion of the surviving records and refer to some 20,000 individuals in all. Their consolidation in this volume, with an extensive index, will certainly facilitate research in this field.
