George G. Benedict was one of thousands of young men who enlisted for the Union cause in the late summer of 1862 when the outcome of the Civil War was yet to be decided. But in addition to his duties as a soldier, Benedict also worked as a correspondent for his hometown newspaper, the Burlington (Vermont) Free Press. Benedict's thirty-one letters gave the folks back home a firsthand account of army life in the Civil War. Now, by supplementing these letters with official documents, newspaper accounts, and comrade's letters, editor Eric Ward expands on this account, providing a fuller and more accurate picture of army life in Virginia.

"I shall never, no never, forget that eventful night when accompanied by one courier, my Adjutant Edwards and Sergeant Major, both being wounded, I full of grief and bitterness, rode to the barns in our rear and saw with tears in my eyes, my brave fellows from away over the mountains in West Virginia, laid out in windrows, torn and bleeding. I shall never forget that night or the next morning's parade when I could muster but 96 enlisted men. Brave fellows, not a slave holder among them." Lt/Col. Vincent A. A cavalier of the South The author of this book was a trooper in the Confederate cavalry who published his recollections of the Civil War in later life. The 6th Virginia Cavalry, the unit to which he proudly belonged, was formed at Manassas in 1861 and it fought principally as part of the Army of Northern Virginia. Hopkins has structured his book as a chronology of conflicts and the list naturally includes some of the most significant engagements of the war. The 6th Virginia took an active role in Jackson's Valley Campaign at Second Bull Run, Brandy Station, Upperville, Fairfield, Bristow, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Todd's Tavern, Spotsylvania, Haw's Shop, Cold Harbor, Early's campaign in the Shenandoah Valley and the Appomattox Campaign at the close of hostilities. Only three of the regiment actually surrendered with Lee-the remainder cut through Union lines and were later disbanded. This excellent first hand account does not seek to be a regimental history-though much interesting information is given by the author-instead Hopkins has elected to concentrate on those events he witnessed himself and upon the accounts of other reliable writers. This is, of course, an excellent source work for any student of the horse soldiers in grey and will be a valuable addition to any American Civil War library. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

"Civil War Regiments from Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia" provides accounts of the various infantry, cavalry, and artillery regiments and batteries which served the Union cause during the Civil War from each of the named states. Each entry provides the names of the senior officers for each organization; when and where each was mustered in and mustered out of U. S. service; battles in which each unit participated; and, in most instances, the total casualties suffered by each regiment during the war. The 1st Delaware Infantry Regiment, 1st Maryland Infantry Regiment, 6th Maryland Infantry Regiment, and 7th West Virginia Infantry Regiment are each listed as one of Fox's 300 fighting regiments found in "Regimental Losses of the American Civil War" by William F. Fox.
