Excerpt from Pocahontas, Princess of Virginia: And Other Poems The author has but a word to say, and that is a word of thanks, to those personal friends whose kindness and encouragement have brought this present volume to the light. If the private friendship and the good will of those whose favor it is an honor to enjoy, can avail anything to support a difficult task with cheerfulness, the author is so cheered and supported in this publication. That the liberality given to the MSS. will also be extended to the book, he has no doubt; and in this good hope, he willingly intrusts his undertaking to the care of his friends. Excerpt from Poets of Virginia The facts here presented will be a revelation to many persons, even to those who are well informed in literary matters. There are few who knew or would have supposed that more than a hun dred men and women of the Old Dominion had published volumes of poetry. This surprise will undoubtedly be increased, when the variety and excellence of much of this poetry is understood. As a whole it is notable for its elevation of thought and purity of sentiment; and from beginning to end there is scarcely a line that would bring a blush to the cheek of modesty itself. In his study of the various volumes that came under review, the author has had to assume the role of critic. While trying to be faithful to the integrity that should characterize a literary his torian, he has constantly sought out what was best. His attitude has been one of friendliness; and though he has pointed out defects, where such a course seemed necessary to a fair estimate of a writer, his severity has in 'all cases been tempered by mercy. In more than one case he has deeply felt the pathos of a real poetic talent struggling under irremediable limitations. There has been one feature of the author's work that has brought him peculiar pleasure. In most of the poets that have come under review, he has been able to discover something which for felicity of thought or expression has been worth reproducing and preserving. In a waste of platitude he has sometimes found a. Gem. In this way the present volume has in some sense assumed the character of an anthology, which, it is hoped, will be found full of interest. Excerpt from Virginia, and Other Poems Ye who love the curious windings Of an ancient tale to trace, Filled with all the mystic learning Of a strange, forgotten race; Ye who deem that real wisdom In the past doth hidden lie, - And the present is but folly, Pass me gently, kindly, by. For I have not sought in volumes Dim and musty with old age, And as quaint as ancient fashions, Themes and stories for my page; I have only tried to gather, As in lavish waste they lay, Thoughts and lessons lightly pictured On the fresh leaves of to-day. Excerpt from Virginia Vaughn: A Romance in Verse It was a pleasant room in which to wait, As Leon Grey, while waiting there, perceived; A restful room, in blue and gold and white, With muslin curtains moving noiselessly As breezes from the near by fields stole in, And frolicked in their folds; a tasteful room, With not too little nor too much therein, And not an object breathing forth discord, Of which a critic might complain: "Too rich Is this for its companion ornaments Thus put to shame: " or, "Rather heavy this, And out of true proportion to the things Surrounding." Woman's eye and heart and hand Had all been there, as any might discern: An eye to truly see, a heart to feel, A hand to do, combining to make up A place not beautiful alone, but full Of sweet suggestion, as though something said To him who entered: "A most blessed calm Abides within these walls, though men toil on, And storms beat still, out in the world." The walls Were hung with pictures, such as one endowed As artist or as poet would select, Since they appealed to souls attuned (as souls Of poets are) to all true harmony; To souls awake (as is the artist's soul) To all that's beautiful.
